Can something that takes place in the distance past be considered sci-fi?
Sulphur on 4/9/2018 at 04:38
Sure. See steampunk, retro-futuristic things like Fallout (for the not-too-distant past anyway), etc. Star Wars utilises the fairy tale opening of a far-off land from long ago, but it doesn't mean that an ancient alien civilisation couldn't be technologically more advanced than we are right now; it's par for the course for speculative fiction.
I'm still going with science fantasy though, because that's the only obvious place it fits apart from the larger space operatic end of the spectrum. If you want to put science fantasy in as a subset of sci-fi -- I don't actually have a problem with that. It doesn't fit anywhere comfortably, anyway.

Alien is a slasher film kinda. Though only from half-way once the actual alien is full grown.

I never had a problem with how much sci-fi SW was or wasn't, and I always laugh at myself when I get sucked in by all its drama (oh, so heroic rather than the soap opera drama of the Revenge of the Sith). But I prefer SW games, since they had something more interesting to say. None of the movies got to KOTOR II level for example, only in TLJ Luke got a bit more Kreia-ish approach to the force. Rogue One started like a movie with more adult themes and more serious approach, but it quickly turned out that those were only my inflated expectations ;)

This is like arguing about the intersection of metal and prog sub-genres

Sounds about right, considering who started this thread.

I always thought Star Wars was soft sci-fi. But I mainly thought it didn't really matter because it wouldn't change how awesome it was.

Emphasis on the "was".

Are you
trying to summon fett here to rage about Dream Theater again?

How/when did I miss the prog arguments. That seems like a silly thing to argue about when it's so heavily defined/subgenre'd to hell.
