Mike, er, Plinkett is pretty spot on with his criticisms as usual, but I still liked the movie. I think there's something to be said for Rian trying something different even if it's not to everyone's tastes, and unlike the prequels (whose only commendable quality was being different) it was done by someone who seems to actually like making movies.
It is my least favorite Plinkett review, though, because most of his other stuff made me notice problems in the films (prequels, Star Trek, whatever) that I hadn't noticed before. I prefer critiques that point out things I wasn't really paying attention to consciously (like the Errant Signal or Ross's Game Dungeon reviews of Human Revolution). The TLJ review just seems like a rehash of what everyone else has been whinging about for a year.

Give me Looper over Last Jedi any day. He did great with Looper.

IMO here’s definitely a place for long video essays dedicated to one film or book; Folding Ideas and Lindsay Ellis do a good job with these. I’ve not watched the Plinkett videos so far, though, mainly because what I’ve heard about their humour doesn’t particularly appeal to me.
Edit: Also, I’ve known henke to criticise things pretty often. Negativity is just not his default reaction. In a place like TTLG I find that a rare, refreshing quality.

You're notorious for liking, well, everything...
I'm pretty sure no one likes being labelled 'notorious' for being enthusiastic about nice things. And he doesn't like everything, like that Grimes video I linked in the music thread one time, which means either one of us should should really relook at our priorities. Anyway, be a gentleperson and take the joshing in the spirit it was intended instead of making it personal, mmkay?
RE: Plinkett's videos, yeah, I could do without the constant wiseassedness of the jokes. They don't mesh with the actual serious critiquing that he can do fairly well.

Seems like I touched a soft spot there, although I'm pretty sure Henke doesn't need so many defenders. Anyway, I just said what I think. Not making it personal in any way, but when you're trying to speak with attitude, with whatever degree of joke, you need to have something to back it up, or somebody might call you on it :)
Now personally I prefer video essays like Every frame a painting (I wish the channel was still active), as Tony had tons of interesting things to say, and somehow he always managed to say it within 10 to 15 minutes.

Hah, I don't mind the label "likes everything", even if it's not true. I think it might seem like that because I'll rarely call anything bad, but rather just "not for me". Bad things can still be very enjoyable and personally I like so much disposable pap that I wouldn't begrude anyone else for doing so. I also tend to be more vocal about my appreciation of maligned works (Mass Effect Andromeda. I had a lot of fun with it, for real, guys!) rather than undisputable classics (Dishonored 2. Yeah it's great, whadayawant?).

That was the post where you were supposed to cite something that you don't like. As is... You really came off as "guilty as charged".

The Godfather wasn't that good. There.

Btw. I liked TLJ more than FA. Sure, there was some stupid Luke & Leia shit, and IMO they could easily avoid it. Especially for Leia, since this could be the last movie with her. That scene was ridiculous, but this is entertainment industry, they'll take every opportunity they get to monetize the dead. And I bet the movie could be like 30 mins shorter. The whole planet-side casino sequence felt meh, and could be re-cut or cut out completely without much loss.
Otherwise, there's great energy between Kylo and Rey (although she cries a lot, again), and that salt/mineral desert looked awesome. There's space, there's drama, what's not to like :)

I think Plinkett nailed it on where the movie should have ended. That would have been a great cliffhanger.
