It was pretty good. It felt a little rougher around the edges than TFA, but it subverted a hell of a lot more of my expectations. When they were showing off the snow planet and Snoke torturing Rey in the trailers I was expecting pretty full-on ESB and aside from being a bit dark at times (in terms of the good guys seemingly being fucked) it wasn't anything like that at all. And for being "dark" it sure as hell had a lot of action and humor in it.
Since it's not a remake of New Hope, I fully expect Star Wars fans to hate it.

I thought it was pretty terrible.
It did one or two interesting things, admittedly, but it had so much pure junk in it I was bored almost all the way through.
And the humour, if that's what you want to call it, was mostly cringe worthy.
I still liked Kylo though.

Yeah I gotta say it didn't remind me of Empire at all, but one scene in particular
(Rey's meeting with Snoke, while the Rebels are being attacked) did give off heavy ROTJ-vibes.

That scene also reminded me of Flash Gordon, with the set and costume design.

I just got back from watching this at the cinema. The movie gave me strong ESB and ROTJ vibes like they were trying to replicate bits of it.
Overall I enjoyed it more than TFA, but the movie does not hold a candle to the original trilogy. Seeing Yoda again was kinda cool, and very unexpected. He didn't look quite right though. When Luke did his little hologram trick on Kylo that was awesome. Some good battles, and I liked the light saber battles more in this one.
As TFA was chock full of cameo's I was on the watch for some, but only spotted a couple. I was a bit pissed off when Luke died. I understand why, but killing him off and since Carrie Fisher is dead in real life means that the original 3 are gone. So thats annoying. This one does throw a couple of unexpected surprises. That I liked. Carrie Fisher's daughter got quite a few scenes.
So better than TFA but not better than the originals. Rogue One is still my favorite of the new Star Wars flicks.

The reason Yoda probably looked so strange is because I'm almost definite they were using a muppet, rather than going full CGI a'la the prequel trilogy. I had to give them props for that. Also, Luke dying at the end doesn't mean he's entirely gone. Force ghosts, brah!
I liked it overall. Definitely the best movie of the new movies, probably just managing to edge out the latter half of Rogue One for me. My one real nitpick is that the scenes in Canto Bight felt crammed in just to have a fancy new planet to show off, and made for a weaker story than what was going on at the Jedi temple and the Resistance fleet.

I dunno, I didn't feel like it was replicating the OT. IMO where TFA was a straight homage to the OT, Last Jedi is an homage to the things that influenced the OT. The space battle is more WWII than almost anything that I've seen in a Star Wars setting, Snoke's throne room is straight up Flash Gordon, Luke's entire character arc is like an old samurai film. I think there are some things that don't entirely work, but unlike the prequel films you can at least tell that there are talented film-makers putting forth a real effort into the new ones.
ScreenRants did an article about how polarizing TLJ is, and used this quote "Viewers aren't sure what to make of the abundance of new Force powers The Last Jedi introduces, feel the characters continuously made poor decisions that the film barely addresses, and may have gone too far in places with the comedic beats."
a.) IT'S FUCKING SPACE MAGIC. LIKE IN THE ORIGINAL FILMS. You can basically make the Force do anything you need it to do, it's New Age hippy-dippy bullshit that actually works. This seems like massive fanboy nitpicking, like they can handle Star Wars not having videogame-y bullshit in their space magic. OMG, what level are Leia and Luke when they pull off that shit.
b.) That was basically Poe's entire character arc in the movie. You have to be kind of retarded to not see that it was part of his character's growth.
c.) Comedy is subjective, so I can understand people not laughing at it but...I thought it served the purpose of pacing well. The movie goes into some really unusual and dark places, and everytime the tone is at its most oppressive there's a humorous bit that lightens the mood. It may not work for some people, but I think it was done well. It's not "Jar Jar steps in the dookie" humor. I also think people should go rewatch the theatrical OT again, if they haven't, because those films were a lot funnier than I think most people remember.

I just rewatched it, and I think I figured out part of what is clicking with me. It gets seriously corny as hell in places. I mean (presumably) intentionally corny, late 70's/early 80's sci-fi adventure corny. I want to rewatch Black Hole, Flash Gordon, and The Last Starfighter now.

I need a "Luke brushes off his shoulder" gif. Loved the movie.
EDIT: Why are Star Wars movies and ONLY Star Wars movies allowed to begin with several paragraphs of exposition?
icemann on 17/12/2017 at 07:42
I wasn't a fan of the new Jedi powers either. Puts into question why they weren't used in any of the earlier films.
