Just bought my tickets. :D Man, it looks kind of dark from that trailer.

I think it's pretty likely that they're going for a similar tonal transition from the first film of the new trilogy to the second as they did with Empire Strikes Back. However, while I'm okay with them echoing the OT, I hope that the film won't be quite as much of a copy as The Force Awakens was; I enjoyed the latter, but it did copy too much from A New Hope without sufficiently making the things it was copying its own.

Certainly a lot of similarities to Empire, yeah. The hero goes off to some remote planet to learn from the old Jedi master, but is pulled back when the baddies attack her allies, and is then offered to join the dark side.

The Last Jedi is coming to cinemas here today, I'm planning to see it this weekend.
Metacritic average: 85! Not bad.

Seems to have almost exactly the same ratings as The Force Awakens, for whatever that's worth.

This seems appropriate here. Don't worry it's a parody of another video so it's not gay erotica.

Just came back from seeing The Last Jedi! It was good. It's very very pretty, and they haven't shown all the nicest shots in the trailers. Often because they'd be too spoilery. There's a lot of colored lighting and reflective surfaces, and I'm kind of a sucker for that. It goes quite easy on the action scenes for the first half of the movie, which results in more emotional weight to them when they do show up in the second half. There was also a casino scene, which I didn't see because I had to go to the bathroom then. Speaking of the casino scene, I do have ONE BIG GRIPE with this movie, and the casino scene is part of that.
That whole "disable tracking so they can hyperjump away" plot? Was that really neccessary? Since the plan doesn't work out it feels like they could've completely cut that out and the movie would've functioned just as well. Everyone would've ended up where they ended up anyway? It just muddles the storyline with filler that pads the movie out by another 30 minutes. Even worse, it makes Poe and Commander Laura Dern needlessly butt heads and have a whole big thing, that also ends up not mattering in the end. On the plus side, that whole sidestory did introduce Rose, who I liked, and it finally gave Phasma her big actionscene, and it gave Finn something to do I guess? But yeah, eh, not worth it. The movie would've been tighter and the story less muddled without it.
But yeah, overall I had a good time. Even though there's some fat that could've been trimmed off to make the story tighter, the core components work well. All the Rey and Kylo stuff is good, and they actually managed to make Luke interesting, and feel like he had evolved since Ep.6.

Was it better than the real life space saga of Oumuamua?
