I deleted them and they never came back after restart. Doesn't seem to have had any adverse effects on anything.
I'm going to look into deleting the Microsoft Office crap leftover as well, although that may have hidden hooks and claws.

The easiest way is to google the entry and see what is advised. I don't have any 04s starting unless they're system files or my anti-virus stuff.
If you want to stop some services from running in XP, then (
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/xpprofiles.htm) this is the site I used for various configurations. I did this about 9 months ago when I was trying to boost my pc to cope with some fms. I've had no problems with any of the set-ups I use.

Not sure what products you had, but you mentioned Norton AND Trend. I'd recommend against installing more than 1 anti-virus program at a time in the future. I think you can have as many anti-spyware apps as you want, as long as they are legit and play nice together, but I have seen quite a few travesty's result from competing anti-virus programs.
And, while this is highly opinionated, I usually tell people to steer clear of Norton. The bloat doesn't make up for the usefulness in my opinion and I have seen too many system's performance go down the drain after that program starts to do its thing. Just my opinion, of course.

I agree with you about Norton. AntiMalWareBytes and Kaspersky and Spybot S&D play nice together, although I don't have the Module for AMB, and I only start Spybot separately. The two latter are mostly for scanning, and Kaspersky and Windows Firewall are the sentries.
