I just learnt that the new GTX240/250 are just rebadged 55nm 9800GT/9800GTX+ respectively. This is the second time that 8800 G92's have been effectively re-released with minimal design changes under a new name.
Honestly, why are they allowed to get away with these dishonest practices?

Normally when a rename has taken place it has been accompanied by a die shrink and speed increase, 65nm-55nm (8800-9800), but in the case of the GTX250 it has only had a shorter PCB design, supposedly lower power requirments (only require 1x 6-pin connecter....
But yes they are taking the ***ing piss, they have been trying to silence the press and have even barred some wibsite from doing any further reviews of nVidia products... - (

They've done the same thing with laptops(desktop replacements) aswell, im not sure which laptop vendor it is, Toshiba or sony, but they have "renamed" a 512mb 8800m to 512mb 9800m, personally i think they are trying to clear out their old stock, but its a very poor way to go about it...

I hate it when it comes to video card upgrades these days. Blah. Ok, so should I be going with a 9800GTX? The only other that looks interesting is a GTX285 which is double the price.
*edit*
Oh, and I only have PCI Express and not 2.0. Does that affect anything? It says both are supported, but is there some sort of noticeable performance hit?

What have yopu got atm..? and what your system specs...

Well all I'm really concerned with is if I should go with a 9800GTX instead of going for the GTXxxx range.
But anyway...
Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe
Athlon64 X2 5000 (2.6Ghz)
7950GT
4GB Ram
yadda yadda yadda
Oh, and I'm currently running XP64 although I have access to Vista Enterprise if I need it (which I would install when I have a DX10 card).
*edit*
I've never gone with an ATI card before, but this sort of thing makes me consider jumping ship. So with that in mind, how about a Radeon HD 4870?

If your gonna go for nVidia then go for the GTX260-(216core)
If your gonna go with ATi then go for the HD4870
The nvidia card has better compatabily with DDfix/Thief
The ATi card is faster in some newer games and a bit cheaper than the GTX260.
Ref:
rename - 55nm - 65nm
GTX240 = 9800GT = 8800GT
GTX250 = 9800GTX = 8800GTX
GTX260 - 1.5x the 8800GT
GTX280 - 2.0x the 8800GTX
The 9800GT has slightly higher clocks and runs cooler than the 8800GT
The 9800GTX has slightly higher clocks and runs cooler than the 8800GTX -
Info - the 8800GTX had 768MB memory on a 512bit bus, compared to the 9800GTX which had 512MB on a 256bit bus, so in some games, the 8800 is as fast/faster....

rename - 55nm - 65nm
GTX250 = 9800GTX = 8800GTX
Correction:-
GTS250 = 9800GTX = 8800GTS 512MB (G92)

The clock speeds of stock 8800GT and 9800GT are exactly the same. I've owned both cards.

Thanks, this is COMPLETELY cleared everything up.
Me? I'm going for a Zotac 9800 GTX just as soon as I get paid next. Oh yes...and a Quad Core Q6600. Muhaha.

I moved from a 7900GT to a Radeon 4870 and I'm very pleased with it so far. Mind you, I don't play Thief and haven't tried SS2 on it yet.
