Yeah, but it involves the same 'scour the earth for useless crap" mechanic, ad is a good way to get players to go somewhere other than missions locations.

I tried to give Painted Troll Fat to Malacanth (he wants troll fat, and it was all I had on hand).....no dice.
Same here, then I had to go and hunt for hours (actually I think I did Nocturnal's quest) to get the required troll fat.
Also, for the nirnroot, you could potentially go into CS: Object Window->WorldObjects->Flora and delete the entities NirnrootPlant and NirnrootPlantSmall and save it as a new file and just use that. If you do it with a new game you'll never find the nirnroot to begin with and never get the quest (I think, it may not successfully delete them from the cells, in which case they may still be there and the game will freak out when you try and harvest them.)
If you want to be good and sure that they're gone you can right click on the entities and select "Use Info" which will bring up a list of all the cells that they're in, and you double click on the name which will bring you straight to the cell for you to delete the thing. After going through the several hundred or so you should be good.
Actually I have to agree with you though, I F*ing HATE the "hidden packages" in the GTA series with a burning murderous passion (I think it was a little bit better in SA though because at least they were typed, so certain types of HPs would appear in certain kinds of locations, significantly cutting down on the "I HAVE TO SEARCH EVERY INCH OF EVERYTHING" factor) and my own personal OCD manifests itself much more in the CS (I should have never downloaded it, I should have learned from Morrowind, now that I have it... I'll spend more time here than playing the game) so I may go and delete all of them one by one myself (kind of like plant genocide) and if anyone wants it I'll try and get the .esp hosted (it wouldn't really be hard to do, just time consuming, so I'd be saving other people the trouble.) Anyway, that's all I have to say, good luck nirnroot hunting!
EDIT YA'LLS!
Apparently when you delete either one of the entities it pops up with a window saying "deleting this item will this specific instance in the game world at place a in cell b, do you want to do so?" Hit yes and another one will pop up for an item in a different place, so just hold enter for about 25 secs so clear all of them and you'll be good to go. On the other hand there are apparently potted nirnroots in some homes? I haven't seen any and haven't found it's ID in CS yet, but presumably you could rid the world of those in the same fashion.
