Actually the "slow as hell" HP laptop was a combination of HP underestimating Vista requirements plus the new Panda 64-bit antivirus. i redid the machine installation and went with the default antivirus and it helped quite a bit.
HP replaced the system board and i just got it back today. Hopefully that will help... although i wish i was able to go iMac ;)
p.s. IE 7 sucks to high hell
