2 is better. Looks cleaner. Bold makes everything look fat and ugly.

Can I suggest an option 4?
Viz:
1)<blockquote><smallfont>Quote:</smallfont><hr><font size=2><i>Originally posted by David</i><br><b>The discussion forums at Through the Looking Glass are where the entire TTLG Community............if you feel that another member's post has violated these rules to such a degree that you would like to bring it to our attention. </b></font><hr></blockquote>
Limiting the wordcount within a quote box would lessen the impact of the annoying section of our community who insist on quoting giant posts in their entirety before giving one word replies.

Yes but that would cause unpredictable mishaps wouldnt it? A limitation is always good but what if the quote say is 1 or 2 letters above the limit? Then the poster would have to scrounge around the paragraph looking for words to delete (and possibly even modify certain sentances in order for them to make sense).

Option 2 for me.
If you're up for the work (and if possible) though, I'd say add an option to the User Control Panel > Edit Options > Thread View Options menu and let the user decide what kind of qoute-block is displayed.

I've been working today on getting the quote system to a point where I am happy with it (I'm not especially happy with the current system, but it is better than the vBulletin default I think), amongst other things.
Anyway, how about this, which is the same style as phpBB?
<img src="http://www.ttlg.com/dave/forums/quotes.png"><br><font size=1>Yes, I am aware this is 15 pixels wider than the guidelines allow :p </font><br><img src="http://www.ttlg.com/dave/forums/quoteswhite.png">
Of course, the background colour can be altered but it can only be one colour for both post background colours, unfortunatley.
With this the system would also change from <b>[Quote][B]Originally posted by David</b> to <b>[Quote=David]</b>, however it is all done for you when you click "new reply", so it isn't much of an issue unless you do a lot of manual quoting. An added bonus is that all the current quotes can be bought up to the new style with a few choice SQL queries.
A note: nested quoting is not supported, not because it can't be, but because it looks awfully ugly to have lots of nested boxed quotes. :eww:
So, opinions, thoughts?
I think that this "boxed" method is much nicer and more polished than the default <hr> method.

It is nicer than the current quoting system.
But is might lead to the "quote in a quote in a quote in a quote in a quote"-box chaos. ;)
Anyway, go for it. It is pretty.

Fantastic. :D
Lytha brings up a good point ... other than that, I like the (proposed) new quote system. It's too bad about the background colour. I wonder what the white will look like against white? It'll probably be okay.
edit: Looks great, Daveh.

I like it. However, the
Quote Posted by David
part... can you use quotes with that? ie.
Mortal Monkey on 1/1/2004 at 02:11
I prefer the non-boxed version. Just looks nicer IMO.

I like the first PHP one, with the "Originally posted" outside of the box.
