I get the impression that most people hated 28 Weeks Later on the sole basis of the Trainspotting guy not directing it.
They can suck my dick.

28 Weeks Later was surprising in that it was actually good. Came right out of the blue, that. Especially the opening sequence, which was fantastic. The only part that really jarred me was when (spoilers I guess) they were looking through the nightvision goggles and the infected guy walked calmly past them. It was so out of character for anyone infected and obviously just put in to create a cool scene (which it would have been if not for the verisimilitude being fucked)

:wot:
I hadn't. I was pretty disappointed in the film. Didn't seem like there was much there except maybe some shock value for the shallow horror crowd. But the original ending totally changes my impression of the movie. I see the story actually had a point. Typical Hollywood though to screw up a story to make it fit a formula.

Second recommendation of
A Boy and His Dog. It's kind of dated, super-70s, and rather campy/low-budget, but it's memorable nonetheless.
Twelve Monkeys is probably the best one, though it's not post-nuclear.
P.S. The Quiet Earth is really memorable - I saw it when I was 9 or so and really want to see it again, but AFAIK it's still not out on DVD in the USA, and the foreign DVDs seem to be fullscreen (like the VHS I saw). Poo.
Incidentally, the novel on which it was based is IMPOSSIBLE to find.
Edit: Apparently they released a widescreen DVD when I wasn't looking!
Yeah, it was released a couple years ago. I saw it on Beta when I was like 14 but haven't seen it since. I recall that I really liked the first half of the film and the sci-fi bits, but the human drama didn't come off all that well.
Oh, and 12 Monkeys is probably my favorite film released in the last 20 years.

It certainly was. It was so fantastic, actually, that the rest of the movie couldn't live up to that level of brilliance.
I have to say I liked 28 Days Later more. Weeks replaced the original movie's emotional and psychological perspectives to societal breakdown with simple brutality (see:
the scene where Robert Carlyle kisses his wife for the last time, hollow attempts at commentary with the Iraq war) and while that has its place, it didn't do much to endear me to the movie.
It's a decent, watchable zombie flick though. With excellent use of the John Murphy soundtrack in places (again, opening scene goose pimples ftw).

Get the whole series. Make sure you pick up
End of Evangelion too or you'll be pretty pissed at the TV ending.
And make sure it comes with the original Jap dub. I'm not the sort who pisses and moans about English dubs but NGE's English dub is why people piss and moan about English dubs.
Be forewarned: NGE is about an insane anime director working out his mommy problems though Christian symbolism. Just about every majour character in the series has some sort of serious issue that normal people would be getting therapy for. Hideaki Anno actually expressed suprise that people like NGE so much because the characters are so fucked up.
The remake is an improvement all around, but the 2nd part isn't out yet afaik and it's good to see the original at least once, considering its impact.
Thanks, dethtoll. I can pick it up (minus the movies) for the equivalent of $50 or so at the moment, so I'll bear it in mind.

This maybe more of a zombie genre film, but I have fond memories of (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067525/) The Omega Man, although I did only see it once back when I was about 16, on a 14" Black and White TV set late at night. So it may actually be really shit.
Charlton Heston is in it. And without this film,
I Am Legend would not be.

And if you like 28 Days Later,
28 Weeks Later is also good- in fact, better in some respects. This hurts me so much.

This seems a strange thing to say - you know both The Omega Man and I Am Legend films are based on the I Am Legend book right?

Honestly it was like what "Beyond Thunderdome" is to the original "Mad Max". Sure, it did not entirely blow, but it was quite horrible compared to the original.
