I'm in the process of starting a new weight routine, and I'm wondering if anyone here works out... it's my new obsession. I'm now officially a meathead.
My ideal schedule:
Run 4 miles 3X a week
Lift weights 3X a week
My new weight routine is the Starting Strength routine which focuses on compound lifts (higher weights/lower reps). I'm doing a modified version because I think power cleans really are unnecessary for a 33 year old (and I'm not training to be a body builder), so I do squat, bench, overhead press, deadlift, pull ups, hyperextensions, and a modified sit up.
At any rate, not to be too shitty by being all "dudez I fuggin' work out" (like (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JMOh-cul6M) this guy)... I'm really just curious as to what folks do. I like to adapt and change what I do at times when I find new stuff, so I thought I'd ask.

I gave up working out years ago--just can't wait for this annoyance called "life" to be over.

I need to start working out here soon, too. Something I haven't done heavily since my immediate post-high school days.
Here I am, 30, still eating whatever comes my way like I'm 20, and I'm starting to see the seeds of a nice little gut and love handles because of it. Kinda scary.

You should work in not out

Yeah I'm 33 and I was 230 lbs. a year ago. My doc told me that anything over around 200 lbs. is overweight and potentially unhealthy (I'm 6' 3"). Thus, I joined the local YMCA and started running and lifting weights. I lifted weights for sports in high school, but it had been since college since I last touched weights.
Back then I targeted running for 20 minutes at a time and had a short-term goal of running a 5K in two months after I started. Two months later I ran a 10K and so on. I really focused on the running for a number of months, and then I started in on the weight training about 3 - 4 months ago (I was doing a little bit before that but nothing in an organized way).
Now I'm swinging the pendulum the other way towards weights - something that is much more involved and can have more variation in the way it is done.
However, a year later I am 30 lbs. lighter and I look forward to working out. A year ago I hated it.
At any rate, just doing all this crying in my pillow to say yeah, I know what you mean.

Get some form of bent over row up in there yo. Do it on days you don't do overhead press.
(
http://www.exrx.net/) is a really good site for seeing how lifts should go, finding stretches, evaluating form issues, and all manner of other things.
I've been doing shit recently because of studying.

Yeah I was going to do bent over barbell rows, but with this program you are not supposed to add supplemental routines until you've milked the program for all its worth. This program is built on adding weight
every time you hit the weights, so when the weights get heavy I *allegedly* won't have strength to do beyond what is listed. Once you cease to progress, then you branch out.
I've been doing my own thing up until now which consisted of hammer curls, bench dumbbell presses, bent over rows, pulldowns, lateral arm raises, and all kinds of stuff, but this program is supposed to be a strength building program and one of the best ones out there.

I was going to do bent over rows in place of power cleans until I read the wiki thoroughly and saw that pull ups are preferred. The other lifts should engage the shoulders. We'll see... I'm new to the program. I actually haven't squatted this low in a long, long time. Scary at first.

I don't work out with conventional methods like lifting weights. I do push ups and situps, and lunges to keep my legs going during soccer off season. I just walk alot, (the dogs), some jogging around, lots of bike riding. Not considered a work out at all, but I used to hang myself upside down from a bar in the doorway, thinking the stretching of my spine would make me taller. Then I heard swimming can help. It hasn't though.
I work for a landscaping company and doing all the grunt work like digging holes, lifting rocks and pushing wheel barrows around pretty much does it in terms of a workout.

At 6'1'', 194 lbs, I'm a little too close to that threshold for comfort. While I'm not exactly huge yet, I'm definitely larger and more out of shape than I've ever been. This thread is a good catalyst to get off my ass and do what I've already been brooding on doing for the last few months.
