An HDTV? A HDTV? Neither sound right.
Anyway, does anyone do this? I'm looking for a(n) HDTV which supports 1080p and would be suitable for (extended) use as a PC display.
Chears.

Yeah, I know it's possible. But I haven't seen anyone commenting on the benefits or disadvantages of this approach.
To name but one, whether it causes more or less eye strain to read text, when the pixels are a lot bigger and you're sitting further from the display, etc, etc.

It's personal preference, i.e. suck it and see

Depends what you're going to use it for. I use a 32" HDTV (720p though) plugged into an old Shuttle PC for use as a media centre and it works great.
However, the main problem with HDTVs is the resolution to diagnonal span ratio in comparison with a proper monitor - even the resolution provided by 1080p isn't exactly great if it's a 42" screen.

I don't necessarily see that as a disadvantage. Anything over 1080p requires a much larger investment in a powerful graphics card.
I do wonder how well Office and Windows in general would work on such a screen.

My roommate was using his 40-inch Sony Bravia as his monitor for a while, although he eventually moved his computer outside of his bedroom while leaving the TV there. I honestly thought the setup was sweet. I haven't watched how it performed in the most recent FPS games, however. There isn't anything wrong with my current hardware, so it's not like I'm going out of my way to do the same, but I would go for it myself if I had the money to burn. Except, I don't watch TV, so it will be used just as a monitor.
