BRsomethingsomething speaks the truth. I really recommend the book.
The title is Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.

The movie is pretty good, although it differs quite from the book. Mostly because you never really quite know if the Zone is for real.
You never really see the anomalies, and the film gives you the impression that The Zone is a place created to give life some meaning, a purpose, to those who seek it out. Especially the people in the gray nameless industrialized City of which they live.
I liked the movie, but don't expect there to be any resemblance between it and the game, besides The Zone and the Stalkers themselves.
