By the way, have you thought about using the spread gun yet? You have to shoot it point blank to get the most out of it, but it does so much damage, the risk is worth the tradeoff.
Yeah I have it, just need to remember to use it. Currently stuck on a scythe-wielding miniboss in the south area so I'll give the shotgun a try on him. Haven't bought the deflect bullets attack yet - too many other things to buy!

The bullet deflecting upgrades were among the first things I bought, since I hit up the water temple before everything else. And I was damn sure glad I had it when I finally went south. There are places down there where the game practically turns into a bullet hell shooter.
Though on the plus side, I found the bosses in the south, save for that one bastard (who I hated SO MUCH ), to be about the easiest in the game.

Shotgun on the scythe dude did the trick; took him out first time today. I bought the swish-through-bullets-when-you-dodge move, just not the sword-based one.

Finished it yesterday. It's quite buggy (I even had to fight a difficult boss twice due to a bug), and the controls kinda don't always work (because of the 30fps lock-on from what I've read), but other than that it's an excellent game! It's really like a sci-fi 2D version of Dark Souls mixed with Another World, The Legend of Zelda, Ys and Nausicaa:Valley of the Wind, yet still feels fresh and original.
I wish it was longer, though :( . Too bad the alternate Drifter is exclusive to backers only.

There's new game+ where you get one-shotted by pretty much anything in the game.
The bosses are hard but not extremely hard, that's true ;) . That forest dude's collision detection is kinda weird, though.

Hardest parts I've found so far are the challenge rooms behind the 8-purple-triangle doors...

I haven't played it in a few days, but when I last did, I had almost all of the purple triangles, minus one or two per area. I've been wondering what's behind those doors.
Though beyond that, I'd say that about the hardest parts I've come across all center around chain-dashing across those disappearing floor tiles to find deeply hidden bonus switches and secrets.

When reaching the first boss, should I have more than one upgrade? I'm mainly exploring the eastern part of the map, and I just managed to get the multi-dash upgrade, but I find that those upgrade bits are in relatively short supply.

Having one upgrade for the first boss sounds about right. If it's too hard, you can always explore the other areas and buy some more before having another go - there's a lot open from the start.

Just played the first couple hours of this. I have 1 western triangle, 3 northern triangles, the bomb, and the powerswing upgrade. Enjoying it very much. Love finding all those out of the way secrets.
