I just love the fact that the Wikipedia article on Trance lists Psychic TV as a key influence on the formation of the genre. Music historians seem hell bent on listing the earliest progenitors of certain types of music regardless of simple facts. One example of this is definitely linking two forms of puerile, formless trash such as Tiesto and Psychic TV together purely because it's the only thing they have in common. Tiesto definitely never used Psychic TV as an influence- the fact that he grew up in the Netherlands suggests that he actually hadn't heard any actual music for a frightening amount of time, like most Europeans.
Either that or they intentionally create this insipid, base wank in a really cleverly satirical way that it's gone right over my head. But I doubt that. RAMMSTEIN RULES OK

Yep I like Tiestos music. Some really good stuff. Saw a dvd of a rave concert thing he did in Germany at a friends place a few months ago. Really good stuff.

No disrespect to Tiesto, but he's not very good is he? It's all pretty dull and derivative stuff, but if that's what the kiddies want to listen to. O for a return to the days of proper trance music!
[EDIT: I just listened to "Lord of Trance" and while it's not quite as shit as the title might suggest, it still borrows heavily from about half a dozen better tracks]

I dunno, commercial trance is responsible for one of the more amusing moments in dance music, when Sasha, Digweed & co had to bail out of the trance dinghy, and then threw massive trantrums whenever anyone suggested that their sound was 'trance'. Which it wasn't, but only because they decided to extend the definition of 'progressive house' to cover the trancey stuff that they were playing. Aah, genre nazis.
Trance was great back when Oakenfold was mixing it up with jungle, when the connection between the name and the sound was actually recognisable. But then he too when all major-key synthomatic on us. :erg:

The whole trance scene is alittle too drug infested for my liking these days. I definately prefered the old trance days when it was far less commerical.

I too preferred the old days... in fact, this thread has just prompted me to dust off TIP Record's Orange Compilation (which Windows Media Player's media information panel hilariously believes to be Orbital's "In Sides", incidentally).
But I'm a little confused by your assertion that the scene is any more drug-fuelled than it ever was, although I'd agree that the kiddies are taking different drugs nowadays; back then it was probably a joint, mushrooms/LSD and speed, now it seems to very much be the ecstasy, gak and ketamine crowd. I wonder where all the hippies have gone? I'm going to blame Paul Oakenfold ;)

Back "when"? Shrooms and LSD belong to hippie era, ravers of the 90s were driving mostly E. Though tastes are diferent and experiments for a change are welcome.
BTW, Sven Väth is disgusted from Ibiza because it's too overdrugged nowadays. I wonder what "overdrugged" does mean in his book though. Like if Ibiza always hasn't been an European Ecstasy den.
Oh, and Orbital's In sides. :thumb:
