Hey gang.
This may seem like a bizarre request, but could someone check out the intro to this song (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAS_mdbm1Ic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAS_mdbm1Ic (ends when guitars kick in) and tell me what kind of effect/instrument is used to create that ambient effect? I'm trying to add a temp score to a film I'm editing and this would work really great.
Also, this was the first example of this kind of instrument I stumbled across so please discuss the quality of the song elsewhere. I know EMO is teh sux.

I doubt you'll be able to throw something together in GarageBand that would be able to mimic that. You might get close if you put a heavy frequency filter on a pipe organ and gave it an attack time of 1 - 1.5 seconds.

Others are likely to be more precise than I, but I'd say it's some sort of analogue synth-ish pad with a quite long attack, playing chords.
There's some reverb as well of course, and a funny sort of bouncy (
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Keyboard_expression&oldid=292716197) aftertouch but that last one's probably not that important.
You can probably make a good approximation with the 'warm' General Midi instrument (#90) or maybe the 'fifths' instrument (#87) if what you're using let's you mess around with the amplitude envelope (and/or you know how).
There's another factor or two t the sound I won't bore you with. The problem is how to do this in Garageband. From memory the Mac doesn't use the General Midi set as standard. There's probably something similar sounding in their set but I'll be damned if I'd know what it is.
If you're lucky the machine you're on might have it and my advice might be some use.

I could mimic that sound just on my guitar.
It sounds to me like a chord played through a (
http://www.noiseguide.com/product_info/boss_slow_gear_sg1) Slow Gear with a touch of Ring Modulation on it to give it that bell like sound. I could be wrong, its early and I had the speakers turned down.

it's a 60's electric organ synth with about a 2 second attack, and a high sustain, or release depending on the synth. Also the eq cuts out most of the high and mid, or if it uses a tone control, it's turned to the bass side. There's also a filter effect to make the organ slightly crackle, making it sound truely old and vintage. You can mimic that by going to a 'free vst plugins' site and searching for a 60's organ synth with a built in LoFi/noise effect.
