Yeah, I strongly suspected that an older driver would fix it, and I would have tried that, but support for the 5770 was only introduced in 9.11. That's why I said I cannot revert back further than that.
EDIT: But it looks like people don't have a problem with new catalysts on newer operating systems, so it might be time to upgrade to 7?

I may try this, but I don't think it will solve the problem - you're OK because you're using Windows 7, and it seems this problem only happens with XP.

I've an Asus HD5770 with Catalyst 10.10, and a Core i3-530 running Windows 7 64 bit. I'm not seeing any of these problems, so they probably are XP related.

Allright, final report:
I switched to Win764 and now Thief 2 works fine, no problems at all. I never thought I'd have to switch to a newer OS because of Thief 2. :)

I have the same card as you. I haven;t got it to work since November/December 2009 release of CCC.
AppName: thief2.exe AppVer: 1.9.0.0 ModName: thief2.exe
ModVer: 1.9.0.0 Offset: 00188687
The ATI Tools in ladderman's link is pretty nifty. Didn't make DDFIX work for me, but it seems to use lots less RAM, and have more options than the Catalyst control Panel.

Same crash on 4870x2 in exactly same address. You are probably overriding some memory, C++ containers are very sensitive to this. And exactly same GFX distortions. XP SP2 here.
Thief 2 - Credits -> Load Game (2 seconds pause and crash):
AppName: thief2.exe AppVer: 1.9.0.0 ModName: ddfix.dll
ModVer: 1.5.5.0 Offset: 00011da0

yes, this is a known issue, ati hd cards have problems when running ddfix under winxp, there are two workarounds-either use catalyst9.4 or older (hd2000/3000/4000),or upgrade your operating system to windows7 (hd5000).
