Greetings! I've been playing Thief since the "90s and I still enjoy the games today. I've been trying to make the switch to Linux full-time for a year or so now. I just wanted to discuss the way the Thief games run in Wine. I am also wondering if others regularly play these games in Wine as I do and if so, do you have any more pointers?
Wine 1.1.2 seems to be the best bet for playing Dark engine games. The games run full-screen with hardware 3d graphics and that nasty bug where the mouse pointer was stuck in the middle of the screen has been fixed. The frame rate is pretty poor though at anything above 640x480. I also use Darkloader regularly to install/play thief FMs and it works fine. The funny thing is, as a user with an NVidia based card, it is now easier to get Thief running under Wine than Windows :). Oh yeah, the cut-scenes also play too. Has anyone found a way to boost the speed of the game though? I have an Athlon 3200+ with 1 gig of ram and a Geforce 7600 GS. Sure it's an aging system but it should run these games at hundreds of frames per second.

as of now I use linux full time but I was hesitant to try just because I didn;t want to deal with the 'set affinity' stuff with the multi threading stuff. i mainly just responded to your post so you would know that there are other linux users out there. if i had more time i would mess with it but i have too many logs in the fire, actually I only logged in because i can't sleep right now and I saw your post and wanted to congradulatge you on getting thief to run. i only have wine 1.0.0, the one that comes out of the ubuntu 8.04 repository.
but i digress, you the man:cool:

I regularly play Thief while drinking wine. Does that count?

I'm interested in it. I read that a X cursor hack was necessary, but it ran.

ah yes... the X cursor hack is no longer required as of Wine 0.9.57 and up.

hey lost_soul,
i just got thief 2 running in wine, I still haven't figured out how to set affinity to keep it from crashing and the movies don;t work but It does run at full speed for me, i have a pentimum for with a geforce 5200.
i need to upgrade wine and then, like you said movies should work.

Hey Muktei!
I reguarly whine about my Girlfriend drinking all the wine whilst playing Thief so maybe we have that in common? Personally I find Cider allows me better control, but I do tend to find myself naked and shouting obscenities at the Mechanists at 2 am. Is there a fix for this?

hey lost soul, I got thief 2 to run perfectly with wine version 1.1.5. i found ou the correct command for setting cpu affinity and I run thief from terminal. Is that how you do it? I am no where near life of the oarty mission so i don;t know if fog works but I don;t really care if it does or not since when I played through the game for the first time (the best time) i did not have it enabled. i'll tell everyone how it goes if i get there. i may just do fan missions yet i don;t know.
if somebody else out there is starting to be upset by windows and has entertained the thought of switching, you can. I nbever thought I'd be able to do it and I did, and I don;t even like computers. you can game without windows!
i know i'm rambling now but it is a mildy happy time as I am moving in a week to a location with no internet so I wanted to load up my computer with thief 2 (and if time non-gold thief1) and then just download a load of fanmissions, I still have some work to do I think . . . other stuff for moving . . . now I'm really rambling . . . :erg:
