I have ATI HD4650 (Catalysy 8.6) and ONLY ver.1.1.1 work fine for me.
I tried ver.1.3.1 but game crashes to desktop.

I have a Radeon 4850 and had crashes in Thief2.exe (but not dromed.exe strangely) after updating to 9.8.
I went back a few versions to 9.1 and it works. However, based on what KoHaN69 said I'll try 9.4.

Hm, maybe this could be a interface bug in the newer ddfix versions
Somebody still working on ddfix? Come on... :ebil:

Except I'm not using DDfix with this particular graphics card (I used to on my old nvidia 8500).
I tried catalyst ver 9.4 and works fine and with fewer framerate issues in FMs such as 'Rose Cottage'. I think I'm sticking with this version until persuaded otherwise!

AFAIK the interface bug was in older version of ddfix (1.1.1 i recall) which uses directx9, not the latest ddfix that uses directx6/7
There are no compatibility\crashh issues at all using the older ddfix 1.1.1 but it has graphical glitches
