First off, let me say that I never realized so many people still play DX1, until I found this site 3 minutes ago. I was hoping someone here would know whats going on with my game.
Problem: I have just cleared out the NSF HQ of all the UNATCO troops, sent the message and was heading back to paul to kill my first MIB's with my stealth pistol and gas grenades. EXCEPT, everytime I enter Pauls apartment, he has miraculously disappeared. Not only that but the MIB are waiting outside the room and getting killed by them means game over.
I figured it was a minor loading glitch so I tryed a couple of thing. Went back to the base and sent the message 20 times. Killed everyone in the Tavern. Cheated on the subway panel to bypass straight to Gunther, who is friendly for about 60 seconds b4 he realizes I the bad guy and all hell breaks loose.
I also play with only 2 save games, alternating between critical points, except on loading, both have paul as missing.
Anybody ahve a clue how I can fix this? I can't advance to the MJ12 facility unless I have the last conversation with paul.
PS: Does someone know a power scheme I can set my Laptop to, so that Deus EX doesn't lag at all? I have it on "always on" and that helps greatly, but sometimes it still has noticible slowness..or quickness..not sure which is the correct speed.

I've heard other people have this problem before. I'm not sure whether it's a glitch in an older patched version of the game, or not, but that scenario hasn't happened to me, and I have installed the latest patch (version 1.112fm) - if you already have the Game of the Year edition, that should already have 1.112fm. If not, you can get the patch from Eidos' website.
I'm not sure if you can simply load your game from an earlier point to get Paul to appear where he should, but if you cannot, then I think your solution should be to enable the cheat codes, summon Paul, and disable the cheat codes. Another way exists which involves resetting some of the game's flags (which tell the game what actions you've accomplished) by using the "legend" command, only useable when the codes are enabled.
To turn on admin/cheat codes, you must press T (for talk) and you should see a white prompt in the lower corner.
If you don't even see that, you'll need to edit your User.ini file (in the ....DeusEx\System folder) and add a line to that file:
T=Talk
Replace all instances of T= with T=Talk and restart Deus Ex.
Then, while you're in game, and you see that prompt, which looks like this:
>
Then you should type
set jcdentonmale bcheatsenabled true
summon pauldenton
set jcdentonmale bcheatsenabled false (otherwise your savegames will say "CHEATS ENABLED" (or something like that)
I hope that helps... I think I got that all right.
It's worth the trouble. :)

well, the cheats did summon an immortal paul..except i could not initiate a conversation, and i also realized the MIB's are immortal without the dialogue b4. I do have GOTY, but i'll try and find the patch anyway.
It was fun to watch Paul duke it out against 3 MIBs in an endless battle though.
Edit: Got the patch and installed it....no suck luck. I wonder what I must have done to cause such a glitch. There had to be some trigger. Maybe I'm being punished for riot prodding the kid in the mole tunnels...

I shot the first kid (The one that tells you to go to hell) with a tranq dart and dumped him in the ocean. Did the same to the sick guy who begs you to kill him.. And Navarre.. Spent 15 minuets trying to kill Gunther.. And Manderly.. Alot of people, without any karma.

I think I may have discovered why you couldn't speak with Paul Denton. Summon him in the same room where he was sitting when you spoke with him (the main room of his apartment) and then walk over to the chair where he would normally be sitting. A proximity trigger exists to initiate the conversation, apparently. Once you trigger it, Paul should speak with you.
Good luck, let me know if it works. :)
Edit: Hm... he seems to turn aggressive when you kill anyone. I'll ask around, someone I know might be able to fix it.

If you DO want to go the flag route, the flag you should create (in the edit flags choice on the legend menu) is called 'talkedtopaulaftermessage_played'
You'll know you got it right, if when you type it, it gets added and capitalised to TalkedToPaulAfterMessage_Played, since the cases for the flag names are stored in the nametable. Don't worry if that makes no sense. It makes little sense to me, too.

Proximity thing did not work..paul walks away from it, so i tryed the flag idea..it worked! didnt get a conversation but I have heard it about 3 times b4 so thats ok. Man I was soo happy when I realized that the MIB I shot fell down and blew my arm off, but I shoot with my right anyway, so who cares!

I love your screen name.:p

OK, when you press T or Y in game, you should see a little prompt come up at the bottom right of the screen, saying >say_ or >teamsay_, respectively
If you don't, open your user.ini and change all incidences of T= to T=say in the keybindings (there are two places you need to do this, as I recall).
Once you've got the prompt showing up, delete the say/teamsay, and type
set deusex.human bcheatsenabled true
and press return. cheats are now on. Now open the prompt again, delete say, and type
legend
And a big menu 'behind the curtain' thing comes up. Click on edit flags, and in the subwindow that opens, click add flag, and enter a flagname of 'talkedtopaulaftermessage_played', make sure it's set to TRUE, and add it.
It should capitalise, if you've typed it right. The game now thinks you've had the convo with paul, so can do stuff (like de-immortalise the MIBs, and send to to MJ12 when you die).
If you want to turn cheats off, just type (at the prompt again)
set deusex.human bcheatsenabled false
And away you go!
