Er... it wasn't golden plate mail, it was JUST a gold plate. I vaguely remember this quest in a pseudo rock maze. A few hidden rooms in there, one of which had the plate.

No, the golden platemail and the gold plate are two different items. The other one exists, the other does not.

I think the golden plate mail guy in the prisoner's story was the one who dropped the map to the lava room with poisoned columns...
The golden plate mail mention was just to get you exploring enough to find the map.
