My kid has my old computer with 98SE on it. He has DirectX 9. Well, he wanted to try an old disc of mine, Dark Reign. After he installed the game, it checked for DirectX version. The game wants to install DirectX 3a because it thinks the comp doesn't have a good enough version of DirectX. The only choices it gives you is Help (nothing about ignoring it there), Exit (leaves the game and goes back to desktop), Cancel (also brings you back to desktop), and DirectX (which he doesn't want to push in case it automatically starts installing DirectX 3a).
Any workaround to play the game?

A simple google search using: Dark Reign+DirectX 3a+workaround, revealed an answer on the first hit:
This game says it requires DirectX 3a. You will be
warned by this during installation. Just press cancel and continue installing.
Do NOT install DirectX 3a. When the game is installed and you try to run it you
get the same error; Requires DirectX 3a. Now change the shortcut for Dark Reign
from SPLASH.EXE to DREIGN.EXE in the install directory. Use this modifies
shortcut to run the game. No more warnings about DirectX 3a. This also works
with the 1.2 patch.

I was under the impression that the DX installation program would check if a later version was installed anyway?

Well, not in this case anyway. I've run into it before, but you simply moved on without installing DirectX and the installer didn't bellyache. This one needed a workaround.
