Any tips for an Oblivion beginner?

I know that I could get this information in bits and bobs from other threads and pages, but I am hoping to get it all in more compact form. I have two questions:

1) Which are the essential mods for you? (I'm looking especially for texture updates, UI patches etc. - anything that makes the game nicer to play but doesn't necessarily change the gameplay drastically.)

2) What are the things a beginner may want to keep in mind? What are the dos and don'ts?

Get a decent mod that changes the inventory/map screens, but other than that start adventuring with a clear mind.

I'd recommend the (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=25) BT Mod to make the interface better, and (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1071) Satellite Cyrodiil for a better map. Other than that, you should probably play it for a bit and then look for mods that make the improvements that you'd like.

I like Notable Landmarks myself (also listed in the Mods thread) - it adds a Landmark (i.e. mountain) icon to shrines, stones etc. that aren't usually marked on your map - like you wouldn't mark the location of a Daedric shrine if you came across it!
