Just bought a dirt cheap 22" Widescreen LG monitor (FLATRON W2242T) and although I'm fairly happy with my upgrade from a 19" Hanns G, I'm not too happy with the factory settings for colour / brightness... in paticular hooking up my PS3 over DVI-HDMI converter cable, colours look really washed out.
I Know nothing about how to adjust this myself... everytime I get 1 setting in the monitors menu looking ok another FUIU!
Any suggestions how to enhance the colours and get it looking like it should ? I'm looking for an owner who has achieved this and can offer actual settings... (I've googled and got plenty of "with tweeking its ok" but no actual settings!)
Specs are (of relevance) : 8800GTS / LG FLATRON W2242T /Vista 32bit / No Drivers installed for mointor (i.e. running Vista & monitor defaults - don't like bloatwear).
Thanx in advance! DoD.

The moniter will display whatever you feed it, I'd personally try to stay away from adjusting the settings within the moniter, and focus more on the settings in your PS3, or the specific game. I have a 24" Samsung and I hooked my xbox360 to it, I got washy colors. I tried adjusting the moniter settings and everything I did either distorted something, or wasn't clear and bright enough, so I checked the console, and messed with the settings, and got it to look beautiful.
There's are no 'best' settings when it comes to video, because every individual takes liking to different things. I like to adjust color settings to the specific game. In GTA4, I turn the contrast most all the way up, and the brightness down until it looks realistic. Then I'll go look at a street light, turn my saturation all the way down, and then turn it up slowly until it looks just right. If your moniter gives off any odd tint, you may also want to mess with the 'Hue' or sometimes now they have the 'Cool-Warm' setting.
I do hate to say it, because you pretty much said you don't want to hear it, but you really just need to take some time to figure out what all of the controls do (brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, sharpness, picture, etc), that way you will 'always' know exactly what to change to make it look how you want.

You do what I do, go into the nvidia control panel and turn up the digital vibrance - it sorts the washed out colours.

Cheers for the help guys. Digital Vibrance makes it worse, the colours ended up too bright & over satuated!
Tried resetting to monitor defaults but no good. With plenty of tweeking I've managed to get it almost exceptable now though.
Would you know if using a proper dual-link DVI cable will help? Looking at the port on the monitor and the one on the graphics card dual-link is definately supported, but the cable supplied and the one I already had only support single-link (i.e. the 6 extra pins are missing).
Thanx again.

Dual-link is only for resolutions above 1920x1200m so not applicable in your case.
And how far did you turn up the "digital vibrance" I only use 1 click as it were.

Considering the lack of information, you could work with HDTV calibration guides/tools.
(
http://www.lyris-lite.net/quick_and_dirty_tv_setup.html) I recommend this guide, written by the HD software/hardware reviewer for DVDtimes.co.uk. Except you shouldn't touch the sharpness settings on a LCD PC monitor, leave it as is. I usually use the (

sry, thought I'd already replied!
Thanx for the help guys...
EVA: is that software free? My boss has a Spider2 I may be able to borrow (he's in to photography) think that wil do it?
Biker: Tried it the Digital Viberance at loads of different settings & can't get a decent setting... starting to wish I'd stopped with my 19" Hanns G!
Although it looks "ok" ish now after tweeking, I can notice definate colour distortion around text (i.e. text looks kinda multi-coloured rather than black as it should be, but everything else looks ok except photos).

The colour distortion around text may be due to ClearType not working properly. Try turning off ClearType if it annoys you. An option that you might be looking for in your monitor's on-screen menus is "Color Temperature", try adjusting that and see if it makes your PS3 look better for you.

What software? If you mean the Eraserhead DVD, then obviously not, as it's a commercial film DVD (from director David Lynch.). Also try the configuration tool packaged with any THX certified DVD, Terminator 2 Extreme and Ultimate Editions are some, I believe. If you're in the UK, then you should be able to get the Momentum 1-disc release for very cheap.
A full-fledged videophile calibration suite are stuff like (
http://www.dvdpacific.com/search.asp?t=video+Essentials&no=t1) Digital Video Essentials. The former mentioned programs packaged with DVD movies are very basic.

These devices are supposed to be very accurate. Would be worth a try.
