I suggested they sink an old aircraft carrier directly over the well. I'm not sure its any crazier than the other ideas they have tried. Perhaps the physical properties of deep sea water may make it difficult to drop a ship straight down, but if it hit the target, like a dartboard hitting a dart, it could work.
An internet search turned up that Ray Maybus, Secretary of the Navy suggested sinking a battleship. No word on that, but hey, why not use the biggest ship we got?

Grab a shit load of Ping-Pong balls, some chewing gum, two rolls of duct tape, an old towel, and some bits of string and call MacGyver.
It'll be more useful than anything they've done up to this point (other than showing some sense of initial responsibility when dealing with the environment and possible impacts, or just not drilling for fucking oil in the Gulf in the first place--"DRILL, BABY, DRILL! Hey, what happ'en'd?")

I read the Russians (all of 'em) gave the suggestion quite early on, to close the hole with a nuclear explosion. Apparently they did this before a few times. Sounds reasonable to me. (cue for Aliens quote)

After analyzing a bit what they did so far, they still want to get the oil, so they haven't come up with anything to just press hard enough and close the pipe for good.
