I'm having trouble envisioning how Minecraft would work with our current playtime allotment. It seems like a game that requires more than 2 hours a week to really get anything compelling out of it. Of course, I say that never having played any minecraft at all - thought I'd be better served with irl Lego, and the fanbase put me off.
What would that time look like? Tree chopping and building construction? Digging deep?
I think that what we generally play benefits from having clear goals we work towards, which makes the hijinks along the way more fun.
But then we've never tried another way, have we? I dunno, I'm up for trying.

You may very well be right - I've not played more than 1-2 hours of Minecraft, so what you're saying makes sense. At the same time, I find that in VR there's more of an element of hanging out that I enjoy. For instance, I found Rec Room pretty dull unless I first played it with henke and Malf. Rec Room's goals are pretty minimal and basically just facilitate the hanging out aspect, though perhaps the presence of objectives, however thin, makes all the difference.
If we all have Minecraft, it might be worth trying once to see if it's fun - and if it isn't, back to the mine it goes.

Oh, 2 hours in Minecraft should be enough to build a small house/fortress and get started on a mining operation and maybe do a bit of exploration and maybe start building a railroad to somewhere? Not sure what kinda time you gotta put in if you actually wanna get to the end tho. I think there's an end.

Concrete suggestion: Should we see if Minecraft in VR is something that'll keep us entertained for two hours on Saturday, 2 September? (I'm away on 26 August.)

From what I've gathered, the free download of Minecraft on the Oculus store is a 2 hour trial version, right? That should do for the first go. Anyway, key sellers are offering the pc version for less than €2.

At worst, if the demo version doesn't work we'll take the sad guy back to the Rec Room (and/or possibly Dead & Buried). Perhaps it'll cheer him up.

Today it's Arma's turn, but for next time when we've got a VR coop session (if Minecraft turns out to be a flop in VR):
