Well, I went with ESET's Security Suite for the year. Thanks very much for your recommendations!

Thanks for creating an avenue for drama! It's been fun

Yes, and thank you for traumatising me on the idea of torrents!

So, this may be a dumb question, but can us Yanks use Avast or NOD32? I see the links for downloading, but I am not up-to-date on the exchange rate, and if UK-based phone support is attainable here. I have seen Kaspersky in-store before, but never tried it.
It seems an easy thing to do - download whatever they offer - and it'll work for my machine, but I know next to fuck-all about these things (I still use Norton, and have for the last 5 or 6 years); I have no idea what torrents and all that other stuff even is.
Like Matthew, I simply want decent protection for my system. I visit few sites, and my computer is basically for gaming, so a basic setup is all I need. I do bill paying and banking online, as well as buy a few things through Amazon and Newegg; or books on half.com
By the way I have a P4 running XP and a 7+yr old HD, so it might not be the worst thing in the world if this system fried - at least it'd be an excuse to get a new one:erm:

Well I've always used the free versions, though I haven't used NOD32 so don't know off hand whether they have one. The good free ones are perfectly adequate, combined with a Firewall, again I use a free one. All my security programmes are free in fact and I've never had need of support. The couple of issues that have arisen have always been resolved by a bit of googling.
I've done bill paying and banking online as well and never had a problem from that either.

I'm a known Yank and "I pretty much swear by NOD32 these days" isn't enough for you? For shame. ;)

I had no idea, deth...:tsktsk:
I would also be curious to know what nickie uses for firewall, that's free. Free is good, especially since i do little online but solicit advice on forums and shop for stuff I don't need, games I can't play, and forums to help me figure out why....
Hey, look at that - I looked up NOD32 on Google and found the US version's pricing. Gee, a little effort goes a long way, and I didn't even have to try to convert currency!

I like free myself so I use a combination of things to get the same security. I've never found anything difficult to install or use. It's just a bit more initial work. BUT, if you buy an antivirus programme then I imagine the protection is all inclusive.
(
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-firewall.htm#Basic-Firewalls) Here's a review of basic free firewalls.
The laptop I'm borrowing just uses the Windows one with AVG and has no other programmes installed and it's been fine. On my own pc I've always used ZoneAlarm with AVG.
As I said though, I also use (
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) Spyware Blaster and Spywareguard but that's only for XP and earlier. And I also have a Hosts file installed. I use Spybot Search and Destroy, and run Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware occasionally. None of the programmes I use conflict with each other.
(I wish that sodding spelllchecker would stop trying to tell me how to spell programme.)

Malewarebytes with real time protection is just the cats MEOW!, judging by it performance in many youtube videos I've seen. It catches everything on scanning and with realtime it should block as much, along with SpywareBlaster updates. I missed the sale on it for $15, still a one time fee of $25 for realtime is a sweet deal. I don't think Spybot or Ad-Aware is even necessary anymore and they seem bloated and missing maleware detections in certain video reviews I've seen, new designed Spybot even crashed completely.
I'm also trying (
http://www.surfright.nl/en) Hitman Pro free and also (
http://www.prevx.com/) Prevx 3.0 free, both only offer detection but no cleaning in their free versions. Prevx is very light and super fast in scanning, also monitors the system in tray.
I really do hate antivirus progs simply for the hit they take on the system but judging on written and video reviews, (
http://www.vipreantivirus.com/) VIPRE antivirus would be the one I would try. Blocks the hell out of everything, light and also cheap, $25 for premium version with firewall. (
