Another shooting in the USA. Remind me about the reason for having guns again. - by SubJeff

Guns are useful for shooting surveillance cameras. You can't really reach up and knife one can ya?
I thought you could burn out their elements with laser pointers? Or is that just the movies?

So it looks as though shooting the government is a mixed blessing.
Aaron Burr?
Faetal, a round being chambered automatically but not fired automatically = semi-automatic.

I thought "automatic" referred to the fact that the next round is chambered automatically, not just the firing mode. Admittedly, I don't know all that much about guns.
I believe that what you are referring to is (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_firearm) semi-automatic. Automatic weapons keep firing as long as you hold down the trigger and there is ammo to fire. Semi-automatic weapons need you to pull the trigger each time the weapon is to be fired.

Does war really count? That's a situation where firearms are a default, and you don't really own your gun (or do you, in US?)

Automatic is hold the trigger down and it keeps firing, semi-auto fires once for every pull of the trigger.
That said I also am a Brit and not especially clued up on guns. Isn't it great that we're lecturing americans on how their society should work.
I'd probably buy a rifle if I could, mind you. Something lever-action, because they look cool in Westerns. I FLAUNT MY POOR MOTIVATIONS, SIRS.

Bloody hell, he's right. We'll have to reopen that one. Though my reading of
history Wikipedia says that the Slave States got their butts kicked quite hard.

(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_pistol) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_pistol
It's kind of pointless pedantry, but:
"Additional terms sometimes used as synonyms for a semi-automatic pistol are automatic pistol, self-loading pistol, autopistol, and autoloading pistol."
So semi-automatic is the most correct term, but automatic, prior to its use to specifically mean 'firing as long as the trigger is held', used to refer to the fact that no cocking action was necessary to chamber the next round.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

It depends on
when in history you are talking of. In the American Revolution, you had both personally owned firearms and army issued, the same was true of the Civil War, but with more army issued. Anymore, it's all army issued. Outside of the US, who knows?

It's almost as if we're sitting in a quiet drawing room with our big colonial moustaches, calmly checking a pocket watch and then declaring that we've given the Yanks quite enough time left to their own devices, time to tidy things up a bit over the pond.
What-o.

As with basically anything humans are capable of doing, the question should be "why not", not "why".
