Sounds like you need more dole bludgers to put the Great back in Great Britain

And you and SD can have a little sneer about toys and prams etc but well, is it surprising that people might want to look abroad? Sure there are obviously worse places to live than the UK but possibly better places too. If you have better employment prospects, your money goes further, you can afford a bigger house in a nicer area etc.
I think SD's issue is more with the 'well, the system's broken, so fuck it I'm out' attitude than with the idea of searching for a place with a better standard of living.

To be fair to the individual, what hope does the average bear have in making a difference under the current regime of government (or any of the future offerings)? Britain is qualifiedly fucked in a number of areas and it will take a long time to fix. I got the fuck out of there because I was never going to have a standard of living commensurate with my output to society - so quite rightly, fuck them I say.

I'm just curious Scots, because this is a debate I sometimes have with non-medical friends and medical colleagues, but could you further define your output to society and the relation to the standard of living you have/did have in the UK/think you should have please?
And why are you bothered about bears? We don't even have any in the UK.
fonz - if you're leaving the UK in the latter half of June then the tanking is on. Let me know and we could arrange a bye bye/fuck off (depending who comes :p ) TTLG meet/session in London. Of course after getting ripped to the nips with me and my non-TTLG buds + hareem you'll be regretting your decision but that's life, eh?

Perhaps you overrate your output and/or underrate the standard of living, no?

guys guys, quite simple: I didn't work my butt off in an area that's academically intensive and get a top class degree to slave away in a job where having kids and affording a house with a decent yard for them to play in situated in an area where I can walk a dog without fear of being raped/robbed/worse should be considered a luxury. I personally think if that's the case for your highly educated and supposedly desirable graduates (when I went into maths/stats in 98 the market was crying out, that changed post 9-11), that they realise they can't get a good paying job without surviving the gruelling London rat race when other countries and economies can offer the things I mentioned without half the heartache (and yes, I am earning way above my earning potential - even for London - and before that I was already more than comfortable financially in a dual household income for two educated professionals versus what we had in the uk so those who think it's a fallacy can suck on those sour grapes).... What will the intelligent person do? Value themselves and their children before their country, that's what.

I don't see why output to society is particularly relevant. Moving to where your lifestyle is probably going to be better can be done by anybody with the financial means. The only drawback, of course, is leaving behind your base of family and friends.

In his case, it could be argued that it isn't. If you feel that your society isn't holding up its end of the social contract, and Scots clearly thinks it isn't (he mentions fear of being assaulted), then he is well within his rights to peace out and find somewhere else to live.

It'll take a lot longer with all the honest people who would probably be the most useful in trying to fix it leaving the country in the hands of the dishonest bastards who have been taking advantage of the system for the past however many years with a vested interest in the system staying broken running things.
Which is not to say that
you're in the wrong to leave, what with your family and all, but fonz's post reeks of 'I'm looking out for Number One, have fun wallowing jerks!'and I can see how that would rankle with someone like Stronts who, iirc, is trying to work to improve things.
