i finally got Deus Ex working, once i got my arse in gear and downloaded an updated driver. the cursor arrow has a big black square around it, though, in both the menu screen and on the health etc screen. any ideas what the problem might be, and how to fix it?
thanks,

I came across this problem in Windows, but not in DX yet. Dunno. I think I heard something about it in connection with display driver problems, but since you updatet them, this can't be true.
I'm not much of a help, am I?

Are you using the DirectX drivers or the experimental OpenGL drivers? I usually get that effect [and many many more] with the OpenGL ones.

well, the driver i'm using is called XPERT@PLAY 98 AGP 2X that i got of the ATI website, which says it requires directX 8.1, which i have.
the other problem i'm having, which i forgot to mention before, is that when i zoom in with a rifle scope, it's all black with white crosshairs, no details. also, during gameplay, i've got big swaths of black right in the middle of my screen that blocks out anything behind them. that didn't happen in the training, only the actual game.
anyway, this is all greek to me  , so any and all help is greatly appreciated.

is there a patch that could help, maybe? i really would like to get this fixed, 'cause i really want to play. normally i'd just live with it, but it's way too distracting and the black marks block out too much, and i have no idea what to do to fix it.
thanks again,
-toad, who's getting antsy : ~ )

This sounds like a supposedly well-known and well-documented bug with ATi implementations of hardware cursors. See if you can disable the hardware cursor somewhere (I've poked around but I can't find where).
The other (and more likely) possibility is that your card is too old for ATi to give it much attention and they're happy releasing imperfect drivers.
Translation: upgrade, for great justice! :thumb:

okie doke, thanks. i know that i need to upgrade, but my parents are too cheep (and so am i, for that matter :)
i have no idea how to go about disabling the hardware cursor (or even what you mean by that) but i wouldn't be surprised if it was my crummy card that's the problem
