Another Morrowind Problem... - by RyushiBlade

Straight to the point: Every time I load up Morrowind, it crashes. Every time. The Launcher comes up fine, but as soon as I hit 'play', the game crashes. I don't think it's to do with the game at all because I reinstalled it. I'm still getting the error. My brother also played with a few things, but nothing worked. He recommended reinstalling directx. Anyone have any ideas?
Note: I have a Geforce 2 MX. I just downloaded and installed the latest drivers for it. This didn't have much effect either, except causing the launcher to crash if I go into options.

When was the last time you formatted that HD? When you get on the internet, programs flies everywhere and installing/removing programs over time. I know most ppls dont know how or too affraid to do it, trust me it help alot.
Disk Defragmenter DOESNT help much, all the program do is moving stuffs around so the programs can run faster. Sometime it help, but there will be errors on the Hard Disk surfaces.
If you want to skip the formatting, try removing Morrowind (make a backup on your save game) reinstall the Windows, Directx, Drivers, etc. Then install Morrowind back and the save game. Tho you will have to make a new folder if one doesnt exist, where the save games goto. "Saves" under Morrowind.
I format my HD every 4-6 months and it help alot, having a second HD help too by transfering some important files instead of copy them onto CD-Writer or Backup Disks. And after everything go well you will be surprise how fast it run after the HD been formatted.
Hope these details will help you, sorry i was not here sooner.

Hmm do you guys have the lastest drivers for GeForce2? also it wouldnt hurt if you contact Bethesda about this sometime they can help you, that where i got my infos about my video card, which it doesnt support Morrowind but i can play it time to time.
Mine is Radeon and it crashed sometime...
Each time you do something important go ahead and quicksave it often.

I fixed it. I was forced to do a System Rollback to 2 days before the problem started. But since I'd uninstalled Morrowind, then reinstalled it, the two caused problems. I was missing hundreds of files... and I couldn't uninstall it because I was missing an important uninstall file. I had to delete the folder (I kept saves and data files) then install everything again...
But if I were you Akiou, do a system rollback on your bro's pc (if it isn't too late!)

akiou...
here are some suggestions. sorry they are so obvious, but you didn't say what you'd done so far. remember... do one thing at a time. then check MW to see if it helped. if not, then try the next thing.
doublecheck that your video hardware is good.
bring up your RUN command and type in DXDIAG
run all the D3D and DD tests to make sure your hardware is working.
if your video hardware passes the tests, go to your sound tab. sound still plays a factor in how your game looks and acts. try turning your sound acceleration down one notch at a time and see what happens. turn it one notch, check the game. turn it down another, then test the game again, etc. till you get all the way down to basic. if none of this helps, remember to turn it back up all the way.
i had a cheap geF when the game was first released. and it played okay for a bit, but then it did exactly what you describe. it turned out i lost 3D capability on my card, because the chip overheated. not saying that's your problem, but you should rule out any hardware/heat troubles. what's the temp on your card? is your fan working? maybe your card needs to be re-seated. or maybe your whole system is running a bit hot. what kinda cooling do you have? is there tons of dust in there? clean it out carefully, and if it is a heat related problem, AND you don't have case fans, keep a side open and blow a regular fan across it when you play.
also, are your drivers good? the best drivers for MW on an nVidia card, believe it or not, are the 30.82's. this took awhile for everyone to figure out, but this was a big deal when the game first came out. voodoo files has them (along with every other nVidia driver release.... so it's a very good site to try many different driver versions) go to:
(
http://www.voodoofiles.com/7551)
(NOTE: for everyone else, it's a good site for nearly all drivers for nearly all cards!)
also remember that ghost drivers can be a gamer's worst headache. sometimes, you just have to go thru your system from top to bottom to eliminate them from your registry and all the lil places on your drive where nVidia sees fit to install them. having bits and peices of many different driver versions can happen without you knowing it, until you start having unexplained troubles. maybe with all your games, maybe with just one in particular. to deal with it, you'll haveta be comfortable with making backups of your registry and then actually going in, searching for everything related to "nVidia" or "geForce" and deleting them. from there you can have a nearly "virgin" install of whatever version you finally decide on.
make sure you have a good start up, too. too many proggies hog up resources every time you start up your pc. this can give you problems with most games/software that you run, but it also give you major MW problems.
easiest thing to do is bring up your task manager before playing the game and close all running apps, except MW. you should also disable your antivirus proggie, any Norton product and all open IMs, also. just about anything open in your systray should be disabled or closed down.
and that's about all i can think of to check at this time. ;) just remember to do one thing at a time.

My machine pass all DirectX Diagnostic Tool, but MW still crashed often usually when i enter a new area from siltriders.
It just not compatiable with all hardwares (video and sound). Also depend on which OS you have and how it is setup. Like the hardware acceleration for sound, etc.
My sounds is running great (Sound Blaster Live 5.1), but my video is the problems.
Hopefully in the furture TES will have most popular brands supported to all PCs.

Remember that Morrowind will randomly crash all the time anyway. It's only when it's a specific 100% recurring problem that it's worth your time trying to fix it/that it's possible to fix.
