posted this one on cnn and to the local news networks a few weeks ago...copied what I wrote the day after this happened (was freshest in my mind)
News story:

Me and my roommate were heading to the local walmart
(I'm in college, I have an excuse:cool:) in stop and go traffic on Palm Bay road in Palm Bay Florida around 5pm Friday evening when we heard police sirens coming through traffic from behind.
The cars pulled up next to us in the traffic behind one car and officers jumped out yelling at the man to get out of the car while aiming an assault rifle (m16) and several pistols at the vehicle. The other cars in front of us sped away leaving our car sitting right in front of the scene.
The entire ordeal took about 5-10 minutes. It was quite harrowing as the officers were yelling at the man to get out for about 5 minutes before he actually did. Was a great rush though no doubt!

anyways, yeah nerve wracking to say the least.... turns out the guy is now being tried for murder. What really struck me though is when I read the news article in the paper a few days later and saw the guy's face and recognized him immediately. He had pretty much been the talk of my school for the few weeks prior as the woman who he shot lived about a block away and worked at the local Friendly's......also seeing those cops sneaking along crouched beside the squad car looking for movement kinda made me feel like a sitting duck in that damn yellow rental :D

When I lived on near OSU, it was interesting to say the very least. The most memorable is when the DEA raided the neighbors. I was in a strip of townhouse-type rentals, and I shared a large porch with them. They were very much the typical neighbors, they both worked 40 hours, didn't have much foot traffic, weren't flashy, etc... Hell, I was working under a chef at the time, and was always breaking bread with them when I BBQ'd.
Anyway, @ 2am I started seeing flashlights and hearing peoiple crawling around on the porch roof that my bedroom window looked out on. I went to the window and was face to face with an officer in black fatigues, a shotgun, and a flat-black helmet. It was summer, and the windows on the second floor were open. He simply put his fingers to his mouth (the international symbol for STFU) and I froze. I thought for a second I was going to die. Holy shit what did my roomate do this fucking time, etc...
That is precisely the moment the flash bangs went off. I think there was one downstairs and one up, right on the other side of my wall. Glass crashing, shouting, and thankfully no spent shells. They came over after the house was secure and made sure everyone was ok, and understood wtf just happened. Thankfully, it was a plain-clothes officer that came over.
It was amazing how fast and efficiently they work. I have an amazing amount of respect for those fast-strike teams. Brave mofos.

Given the previous unpleasantness that was Northern Irish history our police force has a long history of being armed at all times, unlike those mainland wussies. Many times I've had Heckler and Koch MP5s not-quite-aimed at me when I've been stopped at a checkpoint (the last time being on Monday night, for some strange reason). It certainly gets the heart pumping!

I can't help wondering if he left his music thumping thooom buzz thooom for the enjoyment of the cops the way it's done at every convenience store to the delight of all and sundry.
I'm not so delighted with my local DEA though. Once when my daughter was small and weepy with an earache that had kept us up till the wee hours we had finally gotten her to sleep in her crib. I was dead asleep when a banging wakes me and I get up groggy beside the bed only to notice flashlight beams playing up and down my naked body. About three from the window and a couple from the door.
I gave a half second thought to grabbing a gun in my sleep addled state but figured thieves wouldn't have been so rude. I stumbled into some pants and rushed to the door to tell them to go round the front but it was too late. My daughter was awake again.
They made me get my ID to prove I wasn't a guy named Red. My black hair and beard wasn't clue enough. The name on my mailbox wasn't. The name on Reds mailbox down the road wasn't. When I asked why they didn't check that house they said nobody was home. Unreal.
Good to see folks telling stories again.
