When I first installed thief, I couldn't even watch the beginning credits or scene. I did the reinstall of the indeo video codecs found in the FAQ, which solved that. Now I can watch the begining scenes, but when I click to play and go through the loading screen, the sceen goes black, and I have to Alt-F4 out. I tried the texture fix error found in the FAQ, but that solved nothing.
Reading through the other posts similar to my problem, I tried turning off my AA, but the only option I get is to select a range from 2X through 6X, no off. I did try running on 4X as I saw recommended, but no luck. I then unistalled and reinstalled Thief, but it still ends up back to the black screen.
I am running:
Windows XP
Intel P4 CPU 2.66GHz (not dual or quad core)
2 gigs of RAM
Radeon X800 (ATI)
What else should I try?

What catalyst version are you using atm..?

I use the ATI AIW X800XT and have no problem, but I am using the original drivers on the install disc.
Not sure which version. If I get the chance I'll take a peek. But the newer drivers sometime screw you badly, so until mine breaks I NEVER UPGRADE.

I was running the original version of my card, I just updated it, and still nothing. The odd thing is Thief 2 works fine, but I just can't play the first one...

Well, perhaps, you should perform some cleanup of your PC, if you wish:
1) What about the antivirus? Is it installed? Is it updated? If not, then, please, make sure it properly installed and updated.
2) Did you perform HDD maintenance? I mean error checking and defragmentation. Both are in Explorer (press RMB on the HDD's icon and select "Properties")
3) Did you perform Windows maintenance? Some free utilities like (
http://www.ccleaner.com) Crap Cleaner would perfectly make this work for you.

While that's good info and should be done on a regular basis by nearly everyone, I question whether that would actually do anything at all to making the game run. If his PC was fubared enough that the above keeps Thief from running, then ALOT of other stuff on his PC will be gimped up as well, and this would be the least of his problems.
Rapid, there are lots of threads around here that address these issues. In fact, I started one or two of them in the past week. :p
Running DDFIX and changing the exe filename to thief
_.exe worked for me.
