Whenever I double-click on the icon for any of my hard-drives on the My Computer screen, a dialogue box appears, asking me what application I would like to use to open the document, as though I had clicked on an unknown file type.
Scandisk didn't turn up anything and neither did a Norton 2008 virus scan. So far, I'm managing my hard-drives through the Windows 'Run' utility, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this kind of issue.
My next step would probably involve a Windows reinstall, something I'd rather avoid if at all possible.

Tried pointing it to explorer.exe?

That works, thanks! Problem is, the 'Always use the selected program' box remains grayed out.
I guess I could shortcut explorer to my desktop and use that instead of My PC.
Thanks for the assist.

Another thing you could try is downloading and running (
http://djlizard.net/software/Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip) Dial-a-fix.
Check the "Explorer/IE/OE/shell/WMP" checkbox and click on go.
You can also try typing "sfc /scannow" in a command prompt and see if that fixes it. (I kinda doubt it though.)

I'll give it a go, thanks for the link.

Sounds a lot like the RAVMON virus.
What happens when you right-click a drive?
Are the "Open" and "Explore" commands garbled?
