I was horrified yesterday... My neighbors (across the canal). They have one of those white "Target/Budweiser dogs"... Let's start from the beginning. I was sitting outside watching a rainstorm in south Florida. I Love those. The lightning slamming down everywhere is cool. There was this young Igret stuck inside of a fenced area. I was watching it running back & forth to get out. If it was my gate, I'd open the gate to let it out. But then the owner let the dog out. That bird was dead in 30 seconds. The lady over there called "no stop", yeah right. I would have run out the door & stopped the stupid dog. What was she afraid of, getting wet cause it was raining ?
I just wish I didn't have to see it, it broke my heart when they took the dead corpse of the bird and threw it over the fence like some piece of trash :(
Actually, it killed me to see the bird malled like that. I know it was dead in 15 seconds, probably 5 actually. What I didn't understand is why wouldn't it fly out of there, it had working wings... It tried when the dog started after it, but it it hit half way up the fence & then its' fate was sealed... Which sucked !! :(

That reminds me of the time I was walking my dog when all of a sudden he caught himself a young rabbit. I didn't even know the rabbit was there, we had just turned the corner around some bushes and then I heard a loud *SQUEAK* as he grabbed the rabbit. The rabbit didn't try to run, he may have been injured or he just didn't have the time to react. The rabbit appeared to have died almost instantly. Sucks for the rabbit, but my dog was so incredibly happy to have finally caught one of those. He had been chasing rabbits for years and he finally caught one! The look on his face was pretty funny as we walked back. He walked very tall and upright with a proud look on his face and his tail held high.

awww poor little Igret...yes I hate to see things like that....I think the thing IS...maybe Igrets need a longer take off area than you would think...A bit like Swans need a whole river runway when they go up ..or do they flap upwards not run to take off?..maybe it was a bit tired anyways from the running back and forth..and couldnt get away quick enough.:(
That woman sounds horrid....and if I had a beebee I would practise with it across the canal...on her pooch:D....and get used to it for when thi4f comes out with its new weapons:D....joking of course..for both things ;)
I went to Florida!..once when I was 12...and again for my honeymoon in 91...yes they have great storms there!...and they come in very quick too,and dramatic:eek:...I enjoyed both trips...although the second time there I didnt get much time for sight seeing :cheeky:

Sorry to hear this story. The evil sociopathic neighbor where we used to live once sicced his German Shepherd on one of my cats. No kidding, I heard him say "Go get it, girl!" Of course, this guy actually wore a T-shirt that read "CAT The other white meat". :nono: Thank God I happened to be right there and got the cat safely inside.
Schizoid, you're lucky the rabbit died quickly. When they don't, their screams sometimes sound like a woman being attacked.

Damn these pesky carnivores and their mischievous instincts. Egrets rock however, so booo.

yeah, definately sad, but if it makes you feel any better the Egret would have done the same thing to a fish/worm had it had the chance:erg:
Also Florida lightening rocks! The only possible comparable lightning storms I've ever seen was last summer in northern Texas which blew me away as well (almost literally!). They seem to be more rare though.
Also, this is an awesome youtube music video with some crazy lightning for all you Metallica fans

Yandros, that's fucked up. You should've called the police on him.
Anyway animals being animals can be heartwrenching to watch- and while the lady who let the dog out should've done more to stop the dog, to her credit she did call out. That's distinct from the asshole in Yandros' situation. Watching people be cruel to animals- especially if they use other animals to do it- makes me fistclenchingly fucking angry.

The likelihood is very high that the bird in this story got more humane treatment from that dog than the chicken at the poultry farm did that most people in this thread had for lunch or dinner some time during this past week.

Not every human is suited to take care of an animal. :( And usually the animal ends up loosing all.

Last year there were some noisy starlings on the roof right above my bedroom. I was the only one who noticed it, but after I told my stephfather about it he went up the roof and removed the nest, together with all the young birds. I didn't want him to do this, but he did it anyway. The starlings were way too young to have survived out in the open, so basically my stepfather just killed them for nothing.
On the other hand, we do have a nest box where just last week 9 young great tits flew out of. :D
