Well that's just retarded awesome. I'd have thought that a way to get ~1500 free skill points would have been common knowledge by now.
I assumed it was.

Nah, it's just a really cheap way of making sure it's set to trained in the newgame screen, rather than doing it from that screen in a context-specific way.
You can fix it and nothing breaks, but where's the fun in that?

Then there's the stealth system, it worked just fine in DX, it was very close to thief, it just needed a shadow meter or something to be perfect.
Actually, I kinda liked the lack of a stealth indicator in DX. Though, if I recall correctly, someone posted in TTLG a breakdown of how the stealth system worked in DX, and that despite the fact that light very much factored into it, the degrees of awareness the AI based on it were very limited. So perhaps a "light gem" wouldn't have been of much use in the game as it was back then.
As a sidenote on the subject of stealth types, I think that one game that seems to be constantly forgotten is Hitman. It was an entirely different and fresh approach to "sneaking". I don't see anything of the sort working too well for a Deus Ex game, though, they're very much different beasts, despite the thematical fit of this specific mechanic in game context.

There are so many Frenchmen working on this game that cigarettes will probably ADD health.
As someone who's begrudgingly kept his lungs clean for the past 6 months, I can safely say... that idea is
awesome!

Put me up on the list of people who had no idea.

You never noticed that, Zylon? Downgrading pistols gave you more points for initial character customization without a reduction in skills. It won't say so in the initial skill screen, but once you start the game you'll noticed that your pistol skill is always at least at trained no matter what you do.

I was? I'm not aware of anyone else saying this besides myself, but I am joking to a certain extent. I remember years ago how sad I thought the description of a "action Deus-Ex game" sounded on thought Eidos slides all those years ago. By the sounds of it, and it is too soon to give a definitive final judgment on the game's quality, it seems like there's going for a more action oriented slant despite their assurances to the contrary. Renaming the game would allow them to experiment more this their new approach while also keeping the game tied to an existing franchise. A win-win, right? I sympathized very much the Fallout fans who wished that the game really wasn't titled Fallout 3, but something else. As far as I can tell, it seems to me like Fallout fans have a bit of a bad rap from some rotten apples; and we're not really that much better considering the majority of the community's less than favorable views on DX: IW, Thief: DS, and Bioshock. While I'm very pessimistic by nature, the good word of mouth about Fallout 3 here has swayed me to at least try the game; even if it really isn't a true follow-up to the originals.
I'm pretty sure you're not the only one who's said that, even on this board.
Form pretty much everything I hear, Fallout 3 is quite a good game, and most of its problems come from not innovating
enough.

We're likely doomed though. There are so many Frenchmen working on this game that cigarettes will probably ADD health.
I LOLed.

That's nothing. You think you had it bad with Delacroix's accent? Just you wait :sly:

To me, it seems like a bad case of consoleitus... It makes games too easy when you can recover health just by sitting there. I completed Halo on legendary forever ago. Oh well... as long as I don't have to put the same type of ammo into a rocket launcher that I use in the standard SMG in this game, things are moving in the right direction. I just hope they don't release a console version at the same time as the PC version. Then again, I'm still living in the 1990s where PC gaming was top-notch and titles weren't scaled down across the board just to fit in the RAM of a console.

(Moved this post to a separate thread, as on topic as it was I felt it was likely to derail it more than it would contribute.)

Wooo... that "M" in your post really scared me. For a moment I thought this game was being developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Anything related to Ubisoft has no business in or near my pc. That said, have they addressed the issue of game length? I think one of the reasons we think games from the "90s are better than the games today is because they are in many cases longer. Think Unreal as opposed to Unreal II, Thief as opposed to Thief DS, and of course Deus Ex as opposed to IW. Also, I'm guessing it's too early to know, but what kind of copy prevention malware will the game use? I have a hard time justifying buying anything that requires me to keep the CD/DVD in the drive and activation is an automatic no-purchase.
thiefinthedark on 16/11/2008 at 08:23
@ Lost_Soul:
I don't think they have discussed game length yet, no. The industry trends, however, are on average about 8 hours in length for most average FPS, with games such as fable 2 claiming to be 20-40 hours based on side-quests. Mirrors Edge, however, is a mere 6 hours long, a game which was released on tuesday here in north america.
As for copy-protection, this is very much an issue right now. The more creative and independant publishers are realizing that draconian measures only hurt sales (Read: Stardock) and are getting rid of it all together. The major names, however, are readily embracing it, but not just because of piracy!
The big publishers see the second-hand game business as a major threat to their profits, so they are trying to stamp it out entirely. This is what has given rise to EA's recent "Three-installs then you're ******" copy protection scheme, and Epics recent talk of making you pay an extra $20 to beat the last few levels of a game if you buy it second hand.
Thats the kind of profiteering the industry is facing.:nono:

Regenerating health has nothing to do with console games or console ports or anything to do with consoles and shit games.
If you don't like regenerating health then fine, but it has fuck all to do with a fucken console, and a hell of a lot more to do with trying something new other than fucking health pack.
Besides, DX had a health regen aug, regardless of whether you used it or not it was there. I don't see it as a major problem AT ALL.
If the game is shit blame the devs, blame fucken Eidos but stop jumping on fuckening regenerating health GAAAAH!!!! FUCKEN ANEURYSM
(you had the patience or lack of imagination/attention span to sit through Halo on legendary so you don't get to have a go at regenerating health :grr: )
