I seem to recall one of the augs was some kind of...well, essentially a combat computer, that snaps you to third person so you can watch the game play itself in "cool ways" (your character maims everyone around while you twiddle your thumbs).
Which would be a bit...:erg:
But hopefully I'm remembering incorrectly.
From their point of view, I can see the appeal of switching you to third person for OMG DOC OCK movement and stuff (just from a control/perspective viewpoint), but I'd like to think that something like that would work just as well from first person. Most first person games nowadays seem to let you view your actual limbs, so being able to crane your head round and see crap unfolding from your back would be far more engaging, in my book.
Hopefully they'll listen to us, eh?

I kinda like the idea of TPP for some of these moves. I'm not so wedded to first-person that it would be an immersion-breaker for me, not to mention that depending on the action it would make more sense to be able to see what's in the vicinity of the character a little more clearly than FP can show.

I think it's ok in principle (occasional 3PP). It's one more story-telling mechanism in the toolbox. And it's not too healthy, I think, to be so dogmatic about something that you won't even consider how alternatives could add to the story-telling or gameplay. One shouldn't prejudge what could be a creative way to present some part of a scene.
But that said, like any tool, it could be done awkwardly or ham-handedly, and I gather that that's the bigger issue in the end than whether it's a good idea to be done at all, although I see that opinions vary.

I have nothing against TPP itself, I thought that the Jedi Knight games handled it brilliantly, for example. It made no sense to run around waving a big light bar in FP view, but once you got in TP, the action was great.
I'm just wondering how it can benefit the kind of game DX3 wants to be, and the answers we get are not convincing.
Also, as I said, regardless of merits, in my opinion if they make a toggle, it should cover all the TP/FP conversions, not just one.

I'm still trying to figure out why van HellSing is calling Rene a stupid woman.

Oh yes, most certainly. THE GAEM WILL BE A SHUTER SNOWBLOND2 BLARGH is indeed a correct and reasonable response to, say, the "DX3 in a nutshell" post.
Except that no one has made any statements like that at all (until Yousef in this thread, after you already made your post), that fact that you need to type in all caps and add ridiculous typos prove that your the one who's exaggerating, not the skeptics.
Obviously the statement "why not just call it project snowblind 2" is a joke, referring to the fact that Deus Ex was more than the action game that the article makes Deus Ex 3 seem to be.

In a hugely popular British sitcom from about fifteen years ago, the main character, called René, was fond of using that phrase often.

OK, I think this is badly needed here, since people (you know who you are) are spurting so much misinformation, ludicrous accusations and general vitriol it's sad.
Props go to MrsP for the original thread on the Eidos boards.
The following are verbatim quotes from the Deus Ex 3 community manager, René. Nothing was changed, I even removed the bolding of important phrases that MrsP used.
I read that thread a while ago and it comforted me in my belief that DX3 wouldn't have much in common with the original DX. It actually confirms my worst fears, I mean everything said in there is exactly what I wouldn't want a DX game to be.
Third person contextual actions ? No thanks, make it fully first person, with full body awareness. I actually never liked the switch to third person during conversations in the original game, I always thought it would have been better in first person, with really well animated faces (vampire bloodlines did this very well).
Cover system ? Again no thanks, there's been about a million cover based shooter since gears of war and it's seriously getting old. And besides it just doesn't work on pc, give me leaning and crouching over this crap any day, I don't want to have to play DX3 with a gamepad.
Auto healing has been discussed to death already on other threads but let's just say I hate the idea.
Then there's the stealth system, it worked just fine in DX, it was very close to thief, it just needed a shadow meter or something to be perfect. I can't really picture a stealth gameplay without hiding in shadows. I mean I've played metal gear like anyone else, but I just can't see it in a first person game, to me this just looks like sneaking will be almost impossible, and that consequently we'll just have to shoot our way through using their stupid cover systems.
I don't like the bit about shooting accuracy either. I understand that the whole "newbie agent" at the beginning of DX was a bit overdone since you could barely use a gun if you weren't specialized into it (kind of silly for a super agent even a newbie), but it just needed to be improved not ditched. For example they could make aiming without ironsight really hard in the beginning (but easier if you use ironsight but it's slower and takes more time), and as you progress you get better and better at aiming until you can do a headshot without even using ironsight. To me this just screams no character specialization. It seems they want to make the player feel like an invincible super weapon who's good at everything. This killed all replayability in bioshock and I'm afraid it will do the same here.
The bit about having big levels, and different paths seems like the only stuff they're keeping from the original games but I'll believe it when I see it to be honest. I still don't know how they managed to make such huge and complex levels in the original game, but all I know is that I've never seen a game that surpassed it and I doubt DX3 will manage to do it.
So basically it looks like a GoW inspired shooter based in the DX universe and designed for consoles. I'm not saying that necessarily sucks, it's just not my idea of a true DX sequel designed for the PC.
Matthew on 11/11/2008 at 17:51
I think it has a hell of a long way to go before it can be called a 'GoW type shooter', but hey, hyperbole for the win.

By the way, no one's noticed the subtle self-irony here. In the show, René used that phrase each time his wife walked in on him making out with a waitress, and followed with a ridiculous explanation of what he was doing ("You stupid woman, I'm not embracing her, I'm teaching her self-defense!"), which his wife believed. So I'm René's stupid wife here, trying to believe everything he's saying to calm us down :p.
