There's a seeming inconsistency in Deus Ex which I hope you can help me with.
In the Clinic level during the first Hell's Kitchen mission, JC Denton makes inquiries from the bums seeking shelter there for information on the Warehouse. The strange thing is that one such bum, once you try talking to him, the conversation results as this: "Who will help the widow's son?" "Pardon?" "Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were somebody else." Then, when you try to talk to him some more, he gives you strange replies like: "The NSF are falling right into our hands." and "I like to keep people guessing." It's as if you already gained into his confidence, even happens right after it's established that he made a mistake talking to you in code.
And what does he mean when the NSF is falling right into their hands? Whose hands? The Illuminatti? Majestic 12? Or some other mysterious organization altogether? Who did he expect you were? Paul, or someone else? Why didn't he appear later on in the game?
Could it be possible that missed something completely in this part of the game, or did Ion Storm perhaps left a plot hole that was intended to be filled at some point?

'Who will help the widow's son?' is a Freemason identifier. I think the bum is just a crazy old Mason, not realizing how out of the conspiracy loop the Masons have become in a world with the Illuminati and MJ12 running around.
He forgets that you're not who he thinks you are because he's a crazy old bum, so that's why he starts giving you replies like you're in on it.

Yep, it's an example of Masonic "revelation of the method." In other words, some sort of sign or action with occult significance that only means something to those in the know.
"Who will help the widow's son?" or "Will no one help a widows son?" are Masonic calls of distress. Any Mason who hears it is supposed to come to his fellow Mason's aid.
I agree, the developers probably just added it in for a bit more atmosphere.

From the script:
Quote:
CONVERSATION: OLD BUMBUMWho will help the widow's son?
JC DENTONExcuse me?
BUMOh... sorry, I thought you were someone else.
The NSF are playing right into our hands...
I don't hear much about it, but I know the signs. There's going to be an announcement soon.
We just have to give D.C. a little push.
I like to keep people guessing.
I always beat around the bush. No way I would break the Oath.
