A friend of mine who playtested Deus Ex a couple of years back has been testing Thief 4 in the past few days, and she says she's pretty impressed (she's a big Dishonored fan), but that on the downside it's almost a Dishonored clone. And this could be good news, if it gets around, people will just think it's another Dishonored and won't bother to buy it. Plus it actually helps that they named the game Thief (instead of Thief 4), their little strategy to deceive the public by making non-Thief fans think this is the only Thief game could possibly backfire.

Your post makes little sense and if your friend is wrong it will tell us a lot about her, and you by extension.

@Azaran - if your friend has played New Thief firsthand, then "she's pretty impressed" is a bit thin on detail. Can you get some more in-depth info for us? Possibly have her log on here to discuss?

Pretty sure she's under a NDA and that wouldn't fly.
But hearing it plays like a Dishonored clone is telling in itself I think.

Not sure about that. She told me about playtesting Deus Ex before and never mentioned anything about any agreement. What impressed her were the graphics and how it was just like Dishonored which she loved. She says the cutscenes are still unfinished and look graphically awful, but the rest looks good. Then again she never played the other Thief games.

T4 doesn't really play like Dishonored IMHO, or I should say "feel", because after all within the genre some overlap is to be expected. T4 doesn't hit you as much with the gadgets and movement is also a bit different, partly because of the rails but also the way it is animated (if you can talk about animation for 1st person movement).
By the way, after finally playing Dishonored for a couple of days I think I understand now what the T4 devs meant some months ago by "Dishonored doesn't reward stealth". Compared to the combat "instruments" (both weapons, combos, how it feels etc.), stealth in Dishonored feels to me like something which is primarily rewarded by my personal standards and not by the game itself, regardless of the Chaos system. T4 tries to give you the feeling that stealth is actually doing something and not just not doing it.

Good god, the writing! It infuriates me that someone (or rather a whole writing staff) is actually getting paid to put this incoherent drivel to paper. What an abortion!

If she's impressed how is the similarity to Dishonored a downside?
And how can it be a Dishonored clone when Dishonored is so inspired by Thief that it's compared to Thief by Thief fans and Thief IV is compared to Dishonored by Thief-naive Dishonored fans?

If people liked Dishonored then why would they be put off by more?
Why would it be good news if it didn't sell? You haven't played it yet.

They aren't trying to deceive anyone.
How has anything you've said suggest that this made up conspiracy of yours would "backfire"? Do you think that people will go "OMG, there are other games named Thief, there is no way I'll buy this!!!!"
Nonsense.
