I just had to chime in here. It's not entirely strange to me that Garrett might take on an apprentice for two reasons:
1. Within the context of the first three games, Garrett is speaking to "someone" in the mission intros. Who? I've wondered that. It's not to "the player" of course, so then, who might that be? He wants to tell his stories to someone.
To the player without a doubt.

2. He does have an ego, so I don't see it as strange that he would want to leave a legacy. What better way than to train someone in his methods.
He just wouldn't bother to train someone. And I don't think he wants to leave a legacy. He doesn't need that.

Bonus thought: He does have...some kind of emotion attached to Viktoria in T2, so it's not strange that he might become lonely every so often, despite having put up quite a wall between himself and others. Obviously, this is a different Thief universe, but I think there is some precedent.
Yeah, that was weird. That's because Viktoria cursed Garrett as Platinum suggested (which I don't think so), or just a weak point. Because there is no reason for Garrett to attached to Viktoria emotionally. They were just partners for a short time.
There is third reason though, he might be pissed off because he lost a powerful ally and he had to do whole job by himself.

On the other hand, canon is also re-defined with every new instalment, otherwise we wouldn't have had to interpret a lot of stuff for the City mapping project. I don't know if you can really draw a line there without arbitration.
That's a fair point. I should probably have made my point more general though, since I'm not the one drawing the line; the creators are. TDS defined itself as part of the canon. Purah's CL & T4 both defined themselves from the start as breaking with the canon & being their own thing.
I think you're right in the sense that the devs should also have a lot of freedom to play with the canon, because stories are made to wander. And I remember the adventure we had interpreting new canon with the mapping project too, which I thought was a good thing. So I won't argue that part.
So I guess my point should have been more like, if the author themselves say they're breaking with canon & doing their own thing, I think FM authors will get a little more sympathy for it than the copyright-owning devs, which is a little different than how I first phrased it & is still consistent with your point I think.

I always wondered if LGS would have expanded on that and made it a bit more understandable with T2G had it been made. Just something for Viktoria to do to earn Garrett's trust and give him more reason to be pissed I guess? Like aiding him in more ways than just sending him out on missions or something. Idk, it never bothered me until I thought about it more.
Actually that was something I wondered about EM - maybe a lot of decisions they make are from simply playing the classic games a few times and not participating in the kind of analysis later fans have done, hence coming to different conclusions (for example, until I thought more about it, I always did think Garrett stole for the sake of stealing, mostly due to the game mechanic of spending all your loot on equipment as well as how illogical it was he could rob a whole mansion and still not have enough).

"Return of Garrett" in Thief 4? Uhm, no, Garrett isn't returning in T4, it's some other NuGuy with the same name.

You mistakenly think that NuGarrett and Garrett are the same person, which they are not...They are two different characters that happen to share the same name, each existing in their own separate timeline and universe...Therefore the child in TDS is irrelevant to NuGarrett, because it was a different person named Garrett, that encountered her in a different universe.
'Nuff said.

In which case, complaining how they're not alike would be pointless for anyone holding that view, no?
