For the most part, FM makers have kept Garrett as is and with the same personality as in the games, but when there is a departure, I think people do speak up. One example I can think of is Garrett's relationship with Mercedes in the Calendra FMs, which Purah definitely took some heat for.

If we could get rid of the old harlequin and welcome a NuDawn, that'd be great. :p I thought about getting NuEffect on my username and change it to Beleg Núthalion.
@King No One: Seconded. It's not even just related to the character of Garrett, FMs often did lots of odd stuff that threw me out of immersion. Just because there are some Thief fans paid to make a new game shouldn't mean that we abandon the former open-mindedness. That doesn't mean being less critical, just more politeness and manners... people seem to forget that this isn't tied to a reward.

Regarding that apprentice thing, I wouldn't put it past Garrett to take one. Garrett may be cynical, but he doesn't seem like someone who avoids company at all costs (except the keepers). I don't think he mopes alone in a corner somewhere when he's not out stealing things.

For the record, I liked Purah's new spin on Garrett in Calendra's Legacy. And it wasn't just the Mercedes angle. There was quite a bit he changed. But if you read the readme, Purah was transparent about it... He knew what he was doing & explained why he was doing it.
But I'll grant that there's a difference between a fan being experimental with a character in an FM and the copyright holder doing it in a canon game. FMs are allowed & even expected to be experimental sometimes. It's a way for fans to take some ownership over the fiction & play with it, like any kind of fanfic world. If a canon game does it, it has to know it's not going to get the same liberties that fan works get in a lot of fans' minds though.

On the other hand, canon is also re-defined with every new instalment, otherwise we wouldn't have had to interpret a lot of stuff for the City mapping project. I don't know if you can really draw a line there without arbitration.

Yeah the story sounds cool. Kinda wishing I hadn't read (or seen any videos about it) now, so I could experience it firsthand when I play the game.
