First of all, the scene at the end of TDS was solely for the benefit of Garrett.
Maybe they should have just showed it to him then, instead of the audience. :p

.Yet, regardless of this, the child from TDS is completely irrelevant to NuThief...
This is because NuThief exists in a different universe than the THIEF Universe, and is not a sequel to TDS.
So your argument for why 'Garrett would never do this' is that it's an entirely different universe where different things happened to Garrett? Kind of hard to argue what he would 'never' do then, isn't it?
(I love the irony of you adopting the reboot strategy in order to avoid something from the originals you think is out of character for Garrett.)

Aren't you guys tired of hating on T4 yet?
Yawn.

Nice to hear the actual speech rather then relying on some journalist's transcript. (In particular, the article we saw earlier talking about potential love interests sounds pretty far-fetched.)
Interesting to know that the ritual takes place in the Baron's manor. I hadn't picked that up earlier.

I just had to chime in here. It's not entirely strange to me that Garrett might take on an apprentice for two reasons:
1. Within the context of the first three games, Garrett is speaking to "someone" in the mission intros. Who? I've wondered that. It's not to "the player" of course, so then, who might that be? He wants to tell his stories to someone.
2. He does have an ego, so I don't see it as strange that he would want to leave a legacy. What better way than to train someone in his methods.
Bonus thought: He does have...some kind of emotion attached to Viktoria in T2, so it's not strange that he might become lonely every so often, despite having put up quite a wall between himself and others. Obviously, this is a different Thief universe, but I think there is some precedent.
I do have serious reservations about the upcoming gameplay mechanics, but this story idea intrigues me. I expect Erin will pop up later in the game, as some kind of transformed monster - maybe even a proto-Viktoria.

Despite this not following the story I have loved for well over a decade, I am still very excited for whatever new content they're introducing. This Erin character is interesting and I hardly believe she'll stay dead. After all, both her and Garrett fell from a building. Who knows what the story will give us since this was merely the prequel teaser. Instead of all this, 'Not Thief, Not Thief, Not Thief' mindset, I'm just gonna enjoy it with whatever amount creativity they want to introduce with it.
Who knows? Maybe some other company that is legitimately in the shadows will see this and work from there. Or maybe they already are? =P

You mistakenly think that NuGarrett and Garrett are the same person, which they are not...They are two different characters that happen to share the same name, each existing in their own separate timeline and universe...Therefore the child in TDS is irrelevant to NuGarrett, because it was a different person named Garrett, that encountered her in a different universe.

I think we should finally introduce NuGirl to the nomenclature. Sorry, NuMenclature.

Get with the program.

Sorry, that doesn't fly.
Your original comment was that "Garrett would never ...take an apprentice."
Presumably, you meant original Garrett. So the girl from TDS is not irrelevant at all.

@ Vae seriously you have made your position clear! There is no need to pick apart other peoples posts because they don't fit with whatever equilibrium you have achieved to tolerate the existence of the Nu.
I used to love this community; visited for half a year before I finally joined and now all I have to look forward to is the odd post from the few that want to give the game a chance.
Sure I was annoyed when I heard about all the changes they were making but I was never going to refuse to play the game out of hand. I don't want to blow anyone's minds here but passing judgement on a game before playing it is dumb.
The more I hear about the game (particularly hands-on gameplay experiences from card carrying Taffers) the more interested I am and the more my initial concerns fade.
I also find it hilarious that people decry the direction EM is taking the character of Garrett while celebrating any FM as a more worthy inheritor of the Thief lore. Some FMs have taken far greater liberties with Garrett's character/relationships that what EM is suggesting.
Maybe their declarations be amended like so: NuThief isn't Thief! Thief is TDP (except all the monster/undead missions), TMA (despite its relative lack of undead/monsters), TDS (well maybe 30% of it) and ALL the FMs (except those I disagree with in their interpretation of Garrett/The City/All Factions etc.)
Eidos Montreal couldn't make the perfect Thief sequel because no one, not even (No, Especially) its committed fan base could agree what that would be! Sorry if the long wait has given you some sense of entitlement but considering all of that can you really blame EM (in the current state the games industry is in) for just trying to make the game they wanted to make? The story they wanted to tell? The Garrett they wanted to play?
