I think the recent Deus Ex 3 announcement means we can relax about the title of this game. They switched from Title Number to Title Subtitle, (Deus Ex: Human Revolution) so I suggest it's fairly easy to expect the same from Thi4f. It would mean that T2 is the only game in the series to have a number in the title.
Most probably you're wrong since Deus Ex: HR is actually a prequel.

Deus Ex: Human Resources?
unfortunately, it's even less imaginative than that...preschool wordplay
human (r)evolution
(clever, aint it ???? get it ?? see what we did there ?? no ? well, we will tell it to you 100times in the script, don't worry and we will have a talking head explain everything twice, at the start and end of the game)

Gotta admit...that 'human revolution' bit made me cringe. It's rather amateurish....which really makes me doubt the ability of the writers working in the industry these days. Why not just stick with Deus EX: 3?

I asked exactly the same question on the Eidos forums and was anwered by one of the forum members that using numerals was a 'lazy way of doing things'.

Final Fantasy XIII sure is a lazy title! ;)

The simple FACT is this: There does not need to be a number ANYWHERE in the title.
The first game was
Thief The Dark Project No number
The second game was
Thief II The Metal AgeThe third game was
Thief Deadly Shadows No number
Only ONE of the three had a number.... and it was a roman numeral.
Ever read Roger Ebert's review to Sunshine? It makes fun of the idea that they would send a ship called Icarus I because it would already reveal the fate of the ship.
Why would anybody label the first game in a series, not knowing of any sequel possibilities, with a 'I', '1' or any other numeral method? Your argument doesn't hold up. If anything, we can see a consistency with naming the games with a subtitle. The sequel set up the proper naming technique for any future games. The third is where they hit us in the balls.

Well, if anything, my argument DOES hold up as much as is DOESN'T hold up. To simply say it doesn't hold up because the first game has NO number ignores the fact that the third game ALSO has no number. I see where you're going, but my argument for NO number is valid.
However, nothing speaks LAZINESS like Thief 4 or IIII or IV, etc. The audience wants to identify with the GAME. Imagine to coldness of Star Wars, Star Wars II and Star Wars III.
As you all KNOW, I am in favor of EM going out on a limb with this game. Mix it up a bit. The first thing they could do would be to NOT include THIEF anywhere in the offical title. I would be in favor of something odd like
Garrett's Twilight or
The Dark City or
The Dawn of Steam. If they feel they need to, they can add a small blurb like
........Chapter four in the ongoing saga of Garrett the Master Thief.
