I don't buy the numeral-must-be-left-off-to-appeal-to-new-players bit. Some of the most popular games of all time were sequels to lesser known games.
Off the top of my head Grand Theft Auto III, Final Fantasy 7 and Ultima IV come to mind. While each of these franchises experienced some success before these specific games, they did not become pop culture phenomenons until these particular releases. That III, 7 or IV didn't seem to inhibit millions of new gamers from making these games all-time best-sellers.
That said, I wouldn't mind a Thief: The Title name for the fourth game as long as it isn't as cheesy and meaningless as "Deadly Shadows". That name sounds like a bad joke passed around a marketing department, not a serious entry into the Thief universe. I always thought "Deadly Shadows" just kind of sounded childish. *shrug*

Nope; sorry fearless but there's already been a 'TDP'. ;)
(There's already been a 'Dumb Project' for Thief as well. It was called Deadly Shadows.) :p

If it were up to me, I'd say it's time to revert back to the stained glass logo that they were using when they first changed the name of the game to Thief (rather than simply The Dark Project) which would probably look much better with an IV attached to it, or even a 4. (Maybe I am biased... I've always liked the original stained glass title more than the Zorro logo.)
Uh. I can't seem to find that stained glass Thief logo with the Wayback Machine or on Thief-theCircle.com. I did find The Dark Project logo, though, but is the Thief logo available anywhere? I do remember it, but...

The idea doesn't work design wise - the logo isn't clean/clear enough.
Even after all this time (3 days is a long time on a forum), I still disagree. With my idea, THIEF is what catches your eye, and it's in the middle. Only when you look more closely does the 4 become clear.
