Never played Daggerfall have you? :erg:

Sure, but there's a *teensy* bit more detail in Morrowind, than randomly generated Daggerfall, aye?
Damn internet. Must be set to Hostile again.

While I really loved the strangeness of Morrowind, Oblivion is pure high fantasy (think “Lord of the Rings”) that we all know and love, with cutting-edge, photo-realistic graphics never seen before in an RPG.
I liked the slightly weird\alien side to Morrowind myself. Telvanni mushrooms, 6th house, armour made of insect shells, concrete Minarets, etc. Can't help feeling a load of traditional "stone castles and shining armour" will be that little bit less exciting.

True, but remember this is Bethesda here! I'm guessing the game will be relying on large amounts of Daedra, and a lot of different kinds of them to boot. That should be alien enough for you, aye? And don't forget there'll be other beasts like Minotaurs. Traditional, yes, but face it. A minotaur wandering through a photorealistic forest? Very nice. Very nice indeed.
One of the pictures (I'll search later) really made me fall in love with the game. It looks vaguely greek like, and I love it.

I think being more known will add a extra element to the less known creatures. I mean, think of having goblins running around in your castle dungeon and daedra knocking on the door.

I meant to ask about the combat system. I think I may have read about it in the article in Game Informer, but I can't remember. It's not as simple (and mediocre) as the combat system used in Morrowind. Don't you have to use the thumbsticks and whatnot? Anyone have any information on it?

There's more out there, especially in posts from the developers. The main thing is that they're increasing the depth - player skill will be more important, and it seems your skills will determine effectiveness rather than success. There was also talk of special moves/weapon abilities that you could access as you're skills increase, and general AI improvements will be reflected in combat as well. I think there was also something about opponents yielding to you under certain circumstances. Wonder how that will work?
It sounds great, but I'm still in two minds myself. First-person combat systems that combine player skill and character skill never really seem to work, in my opinion. Look at Morrowind/Daggerfall, same with the newly-released Vampire Bloodlines and DX. Personally, I would prefer they stick either to a wholly character-based system (ala Diablo) or an entirely player-skill affair. I am inclined towards the latter, but others disagree. Still, Bethsoft seem to have really taken onboard feedback regarding Morrowind's flaws, and it definately sounds promising.

Have you played Gothic 1 and Gothic 2?
Player skill + character skill beautifully meshed. The best real-time rpg combat I have experienced. The perfect balance of player timing combined with character damage infliction level.
It seems this is the model being employed for Oblivion, too.

I like the sound of that!
