Friend and I used to play multiplayer without problems back a year ago. We used Tunngle and after some initial hurdles, multiplayer worked like a charm despite some occasional bugged doors. We played a couple times after that over several months and then left the game alone. We both ran SS2Tool 6.0.8 or something like that and had the same exact mods(all visual mods, no gameplay ones). Since then I updated to 6.1.1.0 to fix map issues and then afterwards just uninstalled all SS2Tool components and all mods that I had. My friend left his game the way it was a year ago, with all the mods and the old SS2Tool version intact.
Today we decided to play the game again for the first time in like 8 months but he kept getting a "Join Failed" message everytime he tried to connect to my Tunngle IP. I'm the host and my tunngle IP was showing up fine on shock so I'm sure Shock not recognizing Tunngle wasn't the issue. I figured it was because I didn't have SS2Tool and he did. I got v6.1.1.5, which I think is the newest one, and I made him update to it too. I then reinstalled all the same mods we had except I got Rebirth05 this time and he still has Rebirth04. After all of this he's still getting the Join Failed message.

I'd try to create new, clean installs for both players, and see whether those work or not before loading any mods. also make sure you are using the correct ip addresses, and try switching the hosting player back and forth.
mods that update visuals shouldn't really matter, but all players having exactly the same set just to be sure is never a bad idea.

Try to disable firewall.
You can join even if both of you run different fm's. If the joining fails it most certainly means there's a connection problem. In my case it was always windows firewall.

yea it worked after both of us disabled firewall. thanks for the help. didn't really expect that to work because we didnt need to disable firewall the last time we played.
