I don't know if if it's just me but it really seems like this year had an especially high number of notable passings. Clicking through the (
http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2009/02/26/obituaries/OBITNOTABLE_SLIDE_index.html) NY Times obituary list is almost like bidding farewell to my own childhood: there are so many names that I can remember from the tv, radio, newspapers and from listening to my parents that it feels like parts of my past have been removed forever. It's a weird feeling, the more so because I customarily don't get personally upset at most celebrity or newsmaker deaths. A more comprehensive list is available at (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2009) the source of all knowledge.

No kidding. I had forgotten about how many had died until I took a look. Not even sure that I knew that Ricardo Montalbán had passed.

It's something I've been noticing for a while. Kinda freaky year; maybe it's something to do with being the end of a decade?

Got much more to do with the fact that we had a gigantic explosion of celebrity from about 1970 on, so there are suddenly hundreds of actors, singers, writers, politicians, scientists, and artists that we'll recognise when we see their dead names. Because they were all in their 20s and 30s forty years ago.
Also the real number of famous people shot right up about 30 or 40 years ago anyway. Now that we know the names of every insufferably shit sitcom "actor" we can say "oh them" when they die.

Reminds me of how horribly I will do if I ever have to play, "Dead or Alive?"
(
http://www.deadoraliveinfo.com/) Find out if they are dead or alive in an expeditious fashion.

Yeah, by the time I got to John Hughes I knew I'd know hardly any of them. A revolutionary choreographer, me?, come on.

Add my mother, who passed on 12/24/09. :(
I was going to post a whole thread about it but it got lost hundreds of words in in a failed attempt to preview.
