We'll see. I might revisit it at some point just so's I can see what Richard 'Levelord' Gray did with Scourge of Armagon, and who knows, the benefit of hindsight might make me look upon it more kindly. Or... well, that's what 20/20 means, right.

I recently finished Quake: Remastered, Scourge and Dissolutions are good fun but I also recommend the two MachineGames episodes, Dimensions of the Past/Machine. This Quake 2 remaster I will probably pick up sooner or later, having also played Quake 4 this year.

It's always interesting to hear from people who don't like Quake. It's one of only 2 non-immersive shooters I keep permanently installed (Quake and FEAR) because the gameplay is so engaging.

Quake 2 was great for about 6 months, until Unreal came out, followed by SiN, Half-Life, and Thief. Then it was like Quake who?
I finished the single player campaign. Most levels were nondescript and the story was just serviceable. The multiplayer was MUCH better balanced than Quake 1, but somehow more boring. The graphics were great, but the artists and level designers could have done more with it. It seemed like their imagination hadn't come far from Doom. And so I don't think I'll bother with this remaster.
But if Night Dive ever gets to remaster Unreal, I'd love that.

I liked all the Quakes back in the day, but I think the only one that stands the test of time for me is the original. Such awesome environments, mood, and soundtrack. The rest of them just blur together for me at this point. But hey, maybe I should give it a whirl and possibly prove myself wrong.

Yeah, the original is just so good, you get to listen to great music while shooting stuff in a way that involves a surprising amount of weapon and enemy prioritizing/strategy, and the levels are just interesting enough to make you want to poke around without being annoying mazes. The story is "evil is afoot are you a bad enough dude to kill stuff" which is my favorite kind of story in an action game.
As far as Nightdive remasters go, after they finish the System Shock 2 one I hope they're able to do the Quake Enhanced treatment on some other games. Thief 1/2 would obviously be awesome as would Deus Ex, just to squash the last remaining bugs and have their style of model/texture updates that stay faithful to the originals in a "it looks like you remembered" way. Descent 1/2 Enhanced would be awesome, as great as the Rebirth ports are.

RE: those faux retro pixelated textures that System Shock remake has? They're here too. Unlike SS1R, they make sense here because this is actually a Quake from back in the day vs. being a modern indie FPS, trying to ape the technology limited art implementations of Quake era 3D games from back then.

If nothing else, you can see the love and care that's gone into this quake 2 remaster. Like the amount of work that's gone into it is tantamount to a full game's worth of development.
Quake 2 was always my fave when I was a kid, I think because I was so fascinated by the cyborg body horror aspect of the Strogg. Sure the levels are all brown and forgettable, but it was one of the pioneers of having a proper interconnected world rather than disconnected levels, the shooting is still some of the most satisfying and chunky in any game ever, and the soundtrack absolutely slaps.
The fact that it's free because I own the original game is just the cherry on top.

It's just free for who already owns Q2 on Steam.

Amen to that. Sadly, seems like Epic are doing their best to rewrite history so that Unreal never existed. Ironically, considering the prominence of the engine.
