Man I hate to hear this. He was legendary. Everything I am I owe to Young Frankenstein. Okay well maybe not but damn you know? He is tied up with a lot of damn excellent movies of my youth. A shame he had to go.

It's interesting, considering his first role came in 1961, he really wasn't in that many things, compared to most other actors. But...
Willy Wonka
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
All just timeless classics. Not sure I ever saw The Woman In Red, or Stir Crazy, if I did it was a long time ago. Beyond that, I don't know much of his stuff.
Anyway, so long...Jim...

My Dad loved Gene Wilder and started bringing home rentals after we got our first VCR, around 1984 or so. We starting with Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. I didn't totally get Young Frankenstein, but Blazing Saddles was the funniest movie I had seen at that point and is still probably in my top 10 comedies. Willy Wonka came next. It was OK but I vastly preferred the book. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex... appealed to my early prurient interest, but Gene Wilder only played a small part and his scene wasn't memorable (I can only recall the ejaculation scene now). Sherlock Holmes Younger Brother was a turd sandwich but somehow my Dad still liked it.
Then I remember Silver Streak, his first flick with Richard Pryor, and The Frisco Kid, both watchable and with some funny gags but not masterpieces. They were funnier to me then than now. On the other hand, Stir Crazy and See No Evil, Hear No Evil hold up pretty well. They may not be comedy classics in the league of Blazing Saddles, but when I'm in the right mood (usually buzzed) there are parts of See No Evil, Hear No Evil that can still make me LMAO.
It's too bad he didn't do more films. With more at bats, he would have hit more home runs. RIP.

Gene Wilder's scene in Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex is probably the best part of the movie, and the rest of the movie is great.

Out of respect to the only Willy Wonka (the remake / Johnny Depp's performance in that was HORRIBLE) I watched Charlie and the chocolate factory tonight. First time I'd watched it in years. Still stands up. Though the bit with the chicken getting it's head smashed in during the boat ride sequence really never should have been in that movie.
But anyways that's completely beyond the point. R.I.P Willy Wonka.

I've been trying to check it without any luck but I'm pretty sure I was working for Columbia Warner in London when Blazing Saddles came out. I kind of thought they released it over here but maybe not. Regardless, I loved it and have had a fondness for Gene Wilder ever since. Sad news.

Heh, well let me earn some bad cred by saying I actually liked the new film. But I am a sucker for the creepy-odd acting of Johny Depp so that sold me (and I liked the little personal backstory he had, little more fleshed out than the original if I remember correctly)
