Jesus, the numbers in France are shocking (~300k cases yesterday).
Whatever Omicron lacks in severity is being at least partly compensated for by infectivity.
I had to get tested last Saturday after a trip to Northern Ireland and in the 25 minutes I was there, 2 people tested positive in the test centre.
ICU occupancy is nearly at 100% in my region (almost entirely non-vaxxed people).
And there's the IHU variant emerging in the south too.
In some better news, I read that the 9th vaccine get market authorisation recently, which might raise the rate at which developing countries get vaccinated, which could slow the rate of variant mutation a bit.
Hoping we don't get complete immune escape before then, else 2 steps back with vaccination.
At least the mRNA tech means new variant spike proteins can (presumably) be dropped into the existing constructs. But still a year wait for clinical trials again.
Great news for Pfizer et al, not so much for the everyone else.
